2.0 out of 5 stars Not much Tai chi, none of it drunken
The only tai chi in the whole movie --toward the end-- is well presented, but the attempts at humor are fairly simple-minded and even infantile (fart jokes, fat jokes, etc.) The hero's uncle sports Jerry Lewis-style fake buck teeth, and there are a couple of brief break-dance episodes. Fans of Hong Kong movies would be better served checking out Shaolin Temple 1,...

5.0 out of 5 stars very hard hitting stuff, April 2, 2000

Although we don't see Donnie Yen getting drunk and smacking people around,we definately have a great movie here, along with a great cast.Donnie stars as a young man who gets in a scuffle with the town brat. After a second confrontation,Donnie and his brother(Yuen Yat Chor) tie up the local bully in fireworks, and accidentally set them off. After finding out Donnie made his son go crazy, the rich kid's father hires a professional assassin(Yuen Shun Yee,in a role similar to the crazed opera performer he portrayed in Dreadnaught). After his family is killed,Donnie ends up living with a crazy old man(Yuen Cheung Yan) and his wife. When the killer catches up to Donnie he makes quick work of him, with Donnie barley escaping with his life.He learns the Tai Chi style to counter the killer's hard fighting style, and eventually kills the assassin.Yuen Cheung Yan's character is absolutley hilarious, complete with buck teeth and his wine jug.Very similar to the characters he portrayed in Taoism Drunkard, and Shaolin Drunkard. The dubbing adds to the comedic effect,as he is dubbed very well.It would be ten times better if I could see it in widescreen. The fights are great as usual.I believe the movie came out in 1983 when the fight choreography was constanly getting better and better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good kung fu movie and Donnie Yen's first, November 24, 2006
This review is from: Drunken Tai-Chi [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Now the start of this movie will let you know right away what you are getting in to. Donnie Yen is showing off to a young man that his bike is a lot better than his. This leads to a short bike fight. Now the young man Donnie embarrasses decides to actually try to kill Donnie and his brother(Yuen Chat-Yor). He could have gotten a gun but luckily we have Woo Ping directing this. He decides to shoot him with fireworks. Get ready for one of the craziest action sequences ever and of course one of a kind. So this doesn't work and the boy's dad(Don Wong Tao) hires a killer(Yuen Shun-Yi) to take care of Donnie Yen's family. Donnie is busy showing off his muscles while Shun-Yi comes to do his job. After his brother and dad are killed Donnie gets mixed up with a tai-chi master and his enormous wife who is of course a tai-chi master also. Woo-Ping and his brothers I have always thought were the best at showing tai-chi on screen and this movie shows some of that early brilliance he later perfected. So Donnie learns the soft style to counteract Shun Yi's extremely powerful style and they have their showdown in the good final fight.

Overall I have to say this was a different Woo-Ping movie in a couple ways. The kung fu was great though not his best. It had a few odd scenes like the fireworks fight and the Chinese Opera break dancer. But what sets this movie apart is how touching the story with the killer Shun-Yi is. Since Woo was never a great director we only have touching moments that donn't amount to much later in the movie but it is still nice to have emotional moments in your standard "you kill my father and now I kill you" movie.

There are many versions of this movie out and none are perfect. The Groundzero version that also has Bruce Li's 'Dynamo' on the same disc is letterboxed and is English dubbed and has really good picture quality for a 1983 movie.

Donnie Yen is great in this movie, but the Yuen Brothers give this movie a boost. The comedy served no purpose what so ever.
