Book Description

7 and up2 and upAnnick Chapter Books

When young Carrie sees Drusilla, she has to have her. But how do you care for a duckling? Carrie quickly learns the dos and don'ts of duck rearing: lots of exercise, a place to swim, and no bubblegum! Soon Drusilla is full-grown and part of the family.

But when Carrie and her parents go on vacation, Drusilla must stay behind. Duck-sitting isn't easy, though, and Drusilla is passed around until she's in the care of Garth the handyman. Garth, however, is just as handy in the kitchen, and his interest in ducks is more culinary than caring.

Arriving home, a despondent Carrie must follow the trail to her darling Drusilla. Through some headstrong heroics at the eleventh hour, Carrie saves Drusilla from a fate worse than dinner! Friendship and determination prevail in this warm tale of one lucky duck.

This funny and touching story features easy-to-read vocabulary and short chapters for emerging readers.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-4--Carrie falls in love with a fluffy duckling, even though she realizes that her new pet's yellow down will soon change to hard, sleek feathers. She eagerly learns everything she can about how to care for Drusilla and even trains her to come when she calls her name. When her family goes on holiday, the girl has a bit of a problem finding a "duck sitter," but she eventually enlists the help of a volunteer who seems perfect for the job. Upon her return, she discovers that the sitter no longer has the animal. Carrie then remembers seeing a recipe for "Orange duck" and fears the worst. The family races from house to house in order to find the animal before she becomes dinner. This Australian import has a few odd phrases and Aussie traces, but nothing to deter American readers. For a transitional chapter book, it does have some challenging vocabulary, as well as complex compound sentences. Still, the chapters are short, the plot is strong, and the story line moves quickly with just enough suspense. Amusing pen-and-ink sketches are interspersed throughout. Children who love pets will appreciate Carrie's devotion to Drusilla.--Carolyn Janssen, Children's Learning Center of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH

Review

Chapters are short, the plot is strong, and the story line moves quickly with just enough suspense. Amusing pen-and-ink sketches. (Carolyn Janssen School Library Journal )

Lively, personable style... sympathetic protagonist... invoking and even suspenseful plot, making for an inviting and enjoyable early chapter book. (Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books )

The story is well paced for an early chapter book, and the language is well constructed for young readers. Recommended. (Christina Neigel Canadian Materials )
