I reluctantly bought this because I noticed a lot of reviews said the device required reactivating too often. I've been using the device for 2 months and I haven't had to activate it yet. And it's obviously doing its job inside the safe because I have no more bad odors from moisture. Also, I can see the silica changing slowly getting bluer each time I open the safe. I wonder if some of the reviewers are using too large of an area for the size of the canister? It's a small device, so it's probably too small for a gun safe unless it's only the size of a few pistols.

Otherwise, the device works as advertised. I would buy it again.

Several of our electronics were destroyed by moisture damage in one of our recent moves (from Texas to Florida). When we found out we were moving to Hawaii, I stocked up on these canisters and packed them with all of our electronics as well as with my husband's uniforms. Everything arrived in perfect condition after traveling across the country on a tractor trailer and across the ocean on a freighter. The canisters showed signs of green, which meant that they had done their job! I have reactivated them and use them for a variety of things around the house and will most definitely use them for our next move! A small investment has saved us a lot of money and aggravation!

I love these things. I have ammo cans, gun cases, and a few small safes - all with one of these inside. In my safes, paperwork would always get damp until I started keeping one of these in there. When the gel inside turns dark, just put it in a low-temp oven for a couple hours and you're all set to go absorb some more moisture!

The tins that this comes in has a small window in it so you can see the little gel balls. The color tells you if it needs to be recharged. This formula changes from pale orange to muddy green. The tin container allows no light through it and it's only 3/8" thick so it's hard to tell the color through the window. It's better than the pale orange to clear formula in a similar tin, but it's silly to struggle with it at all.

Get the very similar product that comes in a clear plastic box instead: "Dry-Packs 45 Gram Indicating Silica Gel Reusable Hard Plastic Canister - Cobalt Free!". ASIN:B002VNI6L4 [...] Works the same, but is very easy to tell instantly if it needs recharging.

We bought two for our safe. They worked great, but after 1 month, they were 'full' and needed to be re-activated.
To re-activate, you need to heat in oven for 2 hours at 200 degrees! So, we did that and they were ready to use.
Then, after a few weeks, they needed to be re-activated again. After considering the expense of such, we tossed them,
spent a few more bucks and got a larger brand with an a/c plug-in to reactivate. Wow! That was a great decision.
I'd consider this re-activation cost for a 2 hour gas or electrical usage several times a year.

It seems like a silly thing, but this is going to sit in a dark corner of a bag someplace and the odds of you managing to keep the instructions around long enough to remember how to recharge it after use are pretty low. Having the instructions impressed right into the metal of the device is a really nice touch.

BTW, this thing is far from tiny so be wary if you plan to put it in something.

Hard to give a review for something I just got (and so I can't honestly speak to its long-term effectiveness), but I figured this dehumidifying device would have to be better than throwaway packets, especially since it can be 'recharged' by baking it at 280F in the oven for a couple hours.

I got this mainly because I also just bought this: SentrySafe HD4100 FIRE-SAFE Waterproof File, 0.65 Cubic Feet, Silver Gray. I'd heard that with an airtight enclosure moisture can be a problem, and I didn't want to risk mold or mildew on our important documents or any thumb/hard drives we might also choose to store in there.

Anyway, part of what I like about this cannister is it's thin and fits neatly at the bottom of the file safe, and has the little window to see when it needs to be recharged. We're considering getting an actual security/gun safe at some point, and if we do I'll probably buy a few more of these Dry-Packs.

These work well, and as advertised. As another review posted, they are smaller than the look from the picture.
I only bought one to start, to see how it performed, and now purchased three more. I seem to get about two weeks out of one, and with a few on hand you can rotate.

It takes less than 2 hours in my convection toaster oven, so I bake two and rotate.
I found that 2 work well for my application, even though according to the specs, one should have been enough.

Overall I am very pleased with their performance. I checked with a digital hydrometer and they do indeed lower the humidity level significantly.
