Book Description

October 2002
Conveyed with a mixture of lyrical prose and chilling honesty, The Dry Well is the story of a single mother traumatized by an incident that takes place while her son is away for the summer.

What begins as an ordinary workday morning fueled by several cups of coffee, prayers for a rewarding career and the end of generic products lining her shelves, progresses into a life-altering afternoon with devastating consequences. In the aftermath Julia suffers severe mental anguish, distorting perceptions, and wreaking further havoc on her life. She tries everything in her power to advance the healing process before her son’s homecoming, but isn’t successful. What kind of environment will her son return home to?

Usually Julia turns to her best friend Benjamin for support, but even their relationship seems strained. As a single, gay parent Benjamin has problems of his own. His bond with his son becomes less palpable every day. Julia and Benjamin want to support one another just as they always have, but the constant stress they live under touches every aspect of their lives. Is it time to end their long-standing association?

The core of the story is friendship and personal growth. The resiliency of the human spirit is confirmed, and hope restored.

4.0 out of 5 stars scary, May 28, 2003

This review is from: The Dry Well (Paperback)
You can tell a new writer..normally. Ms. Lyons has definatley captured the esence of a novice writer. It is a very gripping story and the fact that it is true and could happen in broad daylight in a busy parking lot, is just sickening, but unfortunatly it happens. I think Ms. Lyons has successfully and creatively made you feel the pain as she is feeling it, along with the frustration and suffering she goes though as she struggles through everyday.
I do not hesitate in recommending this book and can't wait for her next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling and poignant, April 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Dry Well (Paperback)
The Dry Well was a real surprise to me. I liked very much that it wasn't like a crime scene investigation novel. It delves into the life of the main character and really gives the reader a glimpse of what the ramifications of personal trauma feel like, and it shows the character's growth through the process of recovering. A good read!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A haunting journey through trauma and recovery, April 9, 2003
This review is from: The Dry Well (Paperback)
Half of author Dawn Lyon's proceeds from the sales of The Dry Well will be used to help rape victims -- an additional reason to pick up and read The Dry Well, alongside its poignant characterization and haunting journey through trauma and recovery. A single mother suffers unspeakable harm when her son is away from the summer, and repercussions cause her mental anguish and delusions, threatening to destroy her life. A powerful and compelling narrative, The Dry Well is to be commended for its emphasis of the power of hope and strength within each us.
