Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Everybody hates doing drywall--that's why it's so expensive having it done for you. Staunch (penurious) do-it-yourselfers (and industrious types seeking a new career path) should consult Ferguson's generously illustrated, cheerfully detailed guide. It discloses the secrets of hanging drywall evenly without throwing your back out and the arcane rules of good taping and joint-compound techniques. It airs the strategy of "prebowing" drywall panels, concerns about the "grain orientation" of drywall sheets, and the perhaps more obvious issues of fastening with screws rather than with nails and vice versa. One grows to admire the depth of Ferguson's gypsum-board mastery, for the matters cited seem trifling only to those who have never personally attacked a drywall project. Those who have, or will, will appreciate the clear directions and insightful tips. From choice of trowel to methods of properly mixing powdered joint compounds, Ferguson has it covered. Happy hanging. Mike Tribby

I bought this book after learning to drywall the hard way -- trial and error. Mr. Ferguson distills the most important facts about *efficient* drywall techniques. A quick read. In my last project I saved a lot of time and learned some new "tricks."

Many home improvement books go off on tangents, and offer instruction that hardly seems applicable to the job at hand. This book doesn't waste a lot of time on telling you to wear eye protection, call a licensed contractor (like some contractor is going to come out to advise you on how to do his job), get a permit, etc. Instead it gives you the right instructions to let you do the job right yourself. It assumes some basic knowledge and ability on the part of the reader, but it walks you through virtually every conceivable situation you may face and shows you how to do the job right. Be advised though that hanging and finishing drywall is as much an art as a science, so it takes practice. You will however be able to become proficient if you start with small jobs and graduate as you build skill, if you carefully follow this book.

It is funny to lavish such high praise on a book about drywalling, but it deserves it. This book helped me (a novice) get the confidence to hang, tape and finish like a novice. The in depth descriptions and opinions from an experienced professional helped me get the right tools and make the right decisions.
