5.0 out of 5 stars If you are not a professional drywaller, read this book!
I bought this book after learning to drywall the hard way -- trial and error. Mr. Ferguson distills the most important facts about *efficient* drywall techniques. A quick read. In my last project I saved a lot of time and learned some new "tricks."

Buyers beware that the picture of the book shown is not the actual book that's for sale. If you click on the picture then you will see the actual book which was published in 1996 and not the 2002 version which is shown in the picture. The date is posted in the product details section but if your like me and just look at the picture you will be very disappointed. I've...

Many home improvement books go off on tangents, and offer instruction that hardly seems applicable to the job at hand. This book doesn't waste a lot of time on telling you to wear eye protection, call a licensed contractor (like some contractor is going to come out to advise you on how to do his job), get a permit, etc. Instead it gives you the right instructions to let you do the job right yourself. It assumes some basic knowledge and ability on the part of the reader, but it walks you through virtually every conceivable situation you may face and shows you how to do the job right. Be advised though that hanging and finishing drywall is as much an art as a science, so it takes practice. You will however be able to become proficient if you start with small jobs and graduate as you build skill, if you carefully follow this book.

It is funny to lavish such high praise on a book about drywalling, but it deserves it. This book helped me (a novice) get the confidence to hang, tape and finish like a novice. The in depth descriptions and opinions from an experienced professional helped me get the right tools and make the right decisions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!!!!!!, March 1, 2002

This was my first time drywalling. Mr Ferguson's book was invaluabe to me having a sucessful project. After having water damage from a broken pipe to my finished basement, I got estimates from contractors... Determined not to pay those rates I forged ahead on my own completing the project for a fraction of the estimates. With Mr. Ferguson's step-by-step advice, I ended up with a job that has professional quality. Ferguson gives you everything you need from the choice of proper tools to using screws over nails to how to make repairs. Simply Outstanding! Thanks Mr. Ferguson!

I never knew there was so much to drywall. I've read this book several times while remodeling my house and find a new tip every time. Most books of this type leave much to be desired. This one is truly helpful and comprehensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars A simple to understand step-by step guide to drywall., June 12, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Drywall: Professional Techniques for Walls & Ceilings (Paperback)
I have done quite a few DIY drywall projects in the past. All the written resources I have used before have left a lot to be desired, unfortunately so did my results. This book is a four course meal with dessert. I wish I had three hands so I could hold a taping knife, a hawk, and this book, all at the same time. This book comes as close to a step-by-step guide as you can get. The target audience is definately the homeowner Do-It-Yourselfer. Great Job Mr. Ferguson, and Taunton Press! I'm going to do brick work for my next project, I hope I find a book as good as this one to help out.

The past headaches and nightmares of having contractors perform my remodeling projects has motivated me to become "handy". One of my first projects was drywalling my master bedroom. I had zero experience doing this so I bought Ferguson's book and went to work. The room looks great thanks to this book. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to avoid the expense and frustrations of using contract help for their drywall projects.

I've heard nothing but good things about the 2002 version but this version seems out of date and the illustrations are not as good. Hope this helps someone avoid making the same mistake I did. The newer version is worth spending the extra 5-10 bucks on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very necessary if you're a beginner drywaller., February 10, 2001

I had never even watched any drywalling before I plunged headlong into remodeling a room in my home. I read through this book, went by Mr. Ferguson's step-by-step advice, and ended up with a job that I am quite proud of. My only regret is that I chose not to texture. I painted the finished walls with a semi-gloss paint, and if the light is right, you can see some of my sanding marks. This year I removed a door and patched the hole with drywall. His instructions were invaluable, and yes, I textured this time. It looks great. Thank you Mr. Ferguson!
