Book Description

November 15, 2001
In this historic novel, writer Ada Aharoni reconstitutes the life of the Jewish Community in Egypt at the eve of its exile and its return to the Promised Land. She introduces the reader into the upheavals that preceded and accompanied the uprooting of the Jews from Egypt in the Twentieth Century.Laura is the daughter of the Judge Mosseri, a respected figure in Cairo. She is sensitive, intelligent, and an active member of the Youth Movement Maccabee, where she meets Raoul Lipsky, a survivor of the Holocaust. They fall in love, and he reveals to her the atrocities he has gone through in the Nazi Camps in Maidanek, where he lost all his family. Laura is then moved to reveal to him the painful drama she suffered in her childhood.

The establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, sows fear in the hearts of the members of the Jewish Community, and to their ensuing fleeing and banishment. This historic development leads to a mass emigration of the Jews from Egypt, where they had been living for centuries. It virtually comprises a quite unknown "Second Exodus" in our own times.

This is a well researched book that poignantly rebuilds a beautiful society and rich historical heritage, as well as a part of Jewish history that had almost disappeared. It is also a fascinating love story, full of passion and excitement, where past and present, East and West are eventually reunited in modern Jerusalem. It is an exciting and most revealing story, told by one of the best contemporary international writers. It is highly recommended for all.
