good charger,

This review is from: TRANS4M Dual-Port Universal AC / DC RAPID USB Travel Charger for Motorola, HTC, Samsung, Blackberry and More Smartphones (Electronics)
I've used this charger for a day now. I've used it to charge two iPhone 3GS at once, also on an HTC Incredible, Motorola Droid, and HTC Hero. It comes with 3 charging cables: mini, micro, and ipod. It will take any other USB cable you want to shove in there. It's a nice charger becuase it folds up small, and it does AC charging, DC charging, or you can throw in some AA's while you are out and about for some charging. One things is that it didn't give so much power from generic AA's. I tried some from the 99 cent store that didn't work amazing. Then I tried some Mitsubishi Alkaline batteries, and then some generic Ni-MH recharegables and it worked a lot better. Also, one thing is that it ONLY CHARGES ONE DEVICE AT A TIME with AA batteries. By AC and DC it did two iPhones at once.
This charger DOESN'T charge AA batteries. It actually only takes juice FROM them to your phone. It's a fun toy and it beats the heck out of the ugly oem chargers which can cost just as much at the store. Also, the quality seems pretty good. The charging is pretty fast.Definitely as good or better than charging by computer USB or other. One more thing, it will take back-up power from a 9-volt battery also. Same thing as AA batteries. *****The included cables can also be used for data transfer... this is pretty obvious though I think.

Messed around a little charging my HTC Incredible. Also charged my MP3 player.
I used USB batteries, around half charged, 600mAh. They did a fair job of keeping the Incredible charged while I used it. After a few hours or so of part-time use, the charging indicator on the phone disappeared even though the red light on the TRANS4M was still on so I'm not sure if there was a trickle of battery power still going to the phone or not. I unplugged it to see if the batteries continued to drain. After a few hours, the light faded and the batteries were dead. The DC car plug (folds into the AA battery housing) doesn't lock when out so might flop around if you're on bumpy roads or going over speed bumps. [Side Note] Not a big deal. I made the mistake of using my other cables and only now discovered the cables that come with the TRANS4M do not work on data transfer. They only charge the device.

This is my video review for the Trans4m charger. I apologize about the audio in video, it kind of sucks. Cool charger though for sure. Probably the last charger I'll ever need.

Updated - BEWARE - they make you pay for warranty service,

I bought this item because it sounded good and had mostly positive reviews. It appeared to work well for several months, but I only tried the wall plug in that time. Just recently I tried the 12V plug, which did not work and resulted in a faint smell of fried IC. That same day, the wall plug stopped working as well. I contacted the company for warranty service (3 years are advertised!), and was told that they would be happy to replace it for a $3.99 handling fee! This is in addition to the (understandable) cost of shipping the dead part back to them. So much for their great warranty. There is no indication on their web site or anywhere else I could find that there would be a charge to replace a broken part, and had I known I would have bought a different charger. No way am I going to send them money until they can prove to me that their part will work longer than two months of intermittent use.
[Updated 5/16/11] A few weeks after posting this review I was contacted by the vendor apologizing for the handling fee and offering my a no-cost RMA. I just received the replacement part and so far it is working (wall plug and 12V connector tested). I am not ready to up the rating until I have used it more, but I am hopeful... [Updated 5/26/11] After a week or so of use, the new unit appears to be working, and I tried all of the inputs right away this time. I like the features of this product a lot, and the vendor did do the right thing the seond time around.

On our last vacation, I lost my AC adapter for my Droid Incredible. As I went looking for a replacement (very careful to make sure I got a rapid charger, operating faster than a normal PC usb). When I found this one, I didn't know if it would work. OH MAN! It charges off the wall as fast as my OEM charger (less than an hour; very fast). My wife and I regularly have my Droid and her iPod Touch plugged in charging at the same time.
It works great on road trips, as we both have rapid chargers for our devices (the two usb plugs work in tandem at the same time), and I plan on taking this on bike tour next summer, knowing that I may be able to use the AA batteries in my flashlights to recharge my Droid (for the GPS) when I'm completely off grid. I have not checked 9v batteries yet. And, of note, I did attempt to use 14500 Lithium Ion batteries; but got a warning screen from the Droid to unplug the charger. :( Oh, man, this thing is more than I ever expected for under $20. Highly recommend!

My Dell Streak needed more power than any normal USB car adapter could give me. This did the trick and gave me more choices in how to power/charge device. The options to use two different types of regular batteries is AWESOME.

I wanted to report that I am extremely happy with the product. Ever since I received it, I have used it. It is great for going from the car, to a house, to a bus. In the car, I love being able to charge both my phone and my ipod and then have the ability to continue charging it on the same device when I get home. Very recently I even tried the AA and 9V charging methods. Both were extremely successful. Without the aid of this device, I would have surely run out of battery and had to find an alternative method of entertainment on a long bus ride.
If you play games on either a phone or an ipod this will really help. It is much cheaper than buying a side battery backup and is versatile in its usage. This is an amazing accessory. Normally I don't write product reviews, but for this product, I just had to. If you use electronics a lot, and need to charge them this is a must-have! You'll be glad you brought it! I was!

Not compatible with I-phone 3gs,

I decided to purchase this item for our I-phones (3Gs) and I just tried it and will have to call Amazon to return it! The cable it came with for the I-phone did not work, and even with our own cable, it looked like it was not charging properly (it didn't show it as charging like my regular charging adapter) and -- biggest problem -- it said "not compatible" when I tried to charge with AA batteries!! Going right back to Amazon for a refund! I am very disappointed. I was so happy when I discovered this product after our recent power outage from a hurricane and I thought that this would be so useful not only for power outages, but also for charging 2 I-phones at one time. It doesn't seem to charge one, let alone 2.
I would have given it more stars for all of the above had it actually worked because I think the concept is great and if it had worked, then the convenience and design would have been great! Too bad. I hope I find a product that does all that this claimed to do and will work with our phones.

Will not charge a new iphone4,

I purchased this item because it specifically said it was compatible with iphones.
I just returned from an overseas trip (which is why I purchased this charger). It would NOT charge my brand new iphone4. I received the error message on the phone "charging is not supported with this device". It also would not charge the Mophie juice pack air (extra battery power for the phone) which charges using a USB/mini USB cable.

It does what is stated as all the optional charging points work just great. Been charging 5th gen-iPod, and htc droid eris without issue from the 120v plug, and the car 12v plug. The "AA" battery option works fine, but the 12v plug has to be out to use the "AA" batteries. No big deal, just not as compact. I use the charger nearly every day and has been great! Having a dual output USB charger is the bomb and from so many optional sources is really terrific. Bought this with one thing in mind and that is to charge phone and iPod when in the backcountry and have limited daylight to charge devices from solar power. So far, so good. You can't go wrong for the price. Hope it holds up over time.
My <only> gripe is the floppiness of the 12v connector when plugged into the car, the body of the rest of the charger should have been manufactured a little tighter so that it stays in the angle that you set it. Not a problem, just hope that it gets built a bit tighter in the future. |
