Nice Unit, with Reservations,
This review is from: Dual XD1222 In-Dash AM/FM CD Player with Front Panel Aux Input and USB Charging Port (Electronics)
While I didn't purchase this unit, it was installed in the car I recently bought. It's a really nice stereo, with well laid-out buttons.
It loses 1 star for it's bright blue display (the box on the left of the unit, not the accents). There is no way to reduce the annoying brightness. I'm going to have to resort to using a small patch of window cling film to cut the brightness in half. Hopefully that will do it, because I don't want to ditch the radio for this one drawback.

When I test drove my car, it had this CD/radio receiver installed and it didn't even work. I was glad to hear that somebody had stolen the radio before I had a chance to buy the car. The seller replaced the receiver with the same one!!! The radio worked for the first few days and then stopped working so all I can do to listen to music is plug my mp3 player into the front jack. It may play audio CDs but it will not take mp3 CD which is very inconvenient. And like the other reviewers have said, the display is blinding at night. Yet another drawback is that it only puts out 15 watts per channel max. I'm waiting for somebody to steal my radio again so I can replace it!

As the others have said, the bright blue LCD is annoying. Additionaly, the am/fm tner quit within a month of installation. Dual has a rather low reputation, and this player sure proves that it is deserved.

Bought this unit for my wife's minivan. Terrible sound. Buy a cheap, crappy unit- get cheap crappy sound. Installation was easy but the power output was insufficient for anything other than NPR.

Downright Terrible,

My first aftermarket headunit in a car, and first CD player in a car. I loved it when I first got it as I had no real idea about car audio (and I'm still an amateur, but I've learned a little) and just enjoyed being able to use CD's and AUX cables. Those are the only good parts of this - it can minimally play CD's and AUX cables; the latter of which it does poorly with awful volume output.I've had this headunit for a little over two years now and it is downright terrible. Nevermind the awful power and sound output it's capable of. The quality is downright atrocious. After nearly a half a year to a year of owning it, it began to skip terribly while playing CD's in the mornings or when it the headunit became cold (had sat around for awhile). This was initially redeemed by allowing the car to warm up, and thus allowing the headunit to warm up. The CD player would also skip badly if going over any bumps in the road, whereas other (even stock) headunits would not skip a beat on those same bumps in the road. Being able to let the car warm up to fix the problem with the CD player gave out not long after, and up until now it has only been used for AUX and radio as the CD will skip the entire time it's playing, ad infinum, which is annoying beyond reason. I almost forgot to mention another grievance I had with this headunit. It seemed as though almost every time I went to adjust the volume that the faceplate would temporarily disconnect from the main body and lose power briefly. This caused no end of frustration as I would try to change songs to turn the volume up only to have to wait 10 or more seconds for the CD player to start back up, and hope that the faceplate didn't do it again. I tried so many times to take the faceplate off and put it back on better but nothing would fix it - it is just of terrible quality. Now I wish I had bought a better headunit when I was making my initial purchase instead of just heading down to Walmart and picking whatever was cheapest. It was regrettable ignorance regarding car audio on my part. Dual is an awful brand that I will never purchase from again as a result of this piece of garbage, and I recommend that nobody else purchases their products either.

Not worth the money--but not for the reasons I've read on other reviews.,

This is an extremely inexpensive receiver. It's too inexpensive. I never had any problem with the display being too bright. The main reason you shouldn't buy this because of the output. If you turn it up all the way (46 volume on this unit) you'll notice that your sound is extremely distorted. You'll also notice, however, that your woofer cones are hardly moving at all. This unit simply cannot amplify speakers. It does have a rear-channel output for an amp, and with that, I got good results. If you're planning on buying a wiring harness and rocking-out with your new speakers, think again. I've never tried this unit with factory speakers; the receiver came with the car I got and with Walmart's VR3 triaxial speakers. I wouldn't be surprised if it performed very well with factory speakers. It actually sounds very good with my 5.25 Infinity Reference speakers, but those are 2 ohm so they act more like a factory speaker with this amount of power. The 2 ohm draws more power so it partially makes up for the under-powering problem. I'd give it more stars if I had already mentioned all the problems, but I have not. The buttons are very cheap feeling--I wouldn't mind this if they still worked. You have to push directly in the center of the button with firm pressure for it to respond. It does not read MP3 CDs, which is just ridiculous considering that only software inhibits this feature; they just want you to spend more on the expensive units that have their MP3 codecs. I could get past this if it at least read every standard CDA CD, not just some. I burned two identical disks with the same program, and it read one and not the other. It's just a gamble if it reads CDs or not. Overall, I would suggest not getting this. If you already have one, you can get by with an amp and much patience, but if you don't already have one, don't get one!

Don't buy it,

The bright blue light makes it difficult and unsafe to drive at night. It's as if someone is shining a light in your eyes. The radio receiver stopped working about a month after installation. The CD still works but I paid for a radio too. A waste of money and installation time. It's a shame because there are some nice features on this unit. Unfortunately, features are useless if there is no sound. It's junk.

I cant say anything good. I had the deck installed and the installer told me before he did it, that DUAL had a history of not working very long. The deck I had installed didnt last a week and it was dead. Checked fuse and it was good. Have had 3 decks installed by the same business and none have failed in over 5 years. Was very surprised this one failed period whether it was one week or one year.Very dissatisfied with this purchase.

This is a decent unit for being under $50, however there are a few things that people may want to know
1. The default display is of the radio station you are listening to. You need to hit the display button to see the clock and after 2 seconds it goes back to displaying the radio station. This is super annoying. 2. My particular car requires the radio to be secured into the dash by two brackets that can screw into the sides of the radio. The radio has holes for the screws but the screws THAT ARE INCLUDED WITH THE RADIO IN THE BOX FROM DUAL do no fit the holes. I just used short self tapping screws and drilled into the side of the radio. Still, I was crazy frustrated when I ran into this obstacle. 3. The display is super bright blue. There is no dimming for it at night and its actually distracting. BUT this type of functionality can't really be expected in a unit for under $50. Just wanted to warn those that may find something like this distracting. |
