Powerful and Good Looking, Quality Suspect,

This review is from: Dualit 88520 Professional 5 Speed Hand Mixer, Chrome (Kitchen)
Bottom Line: Glad I bought it to replace a pathetically weak KitchenAid (the 7-speed digital), but it falls below the build quality standards you associate with Dualit.Pros: * Powerful and fast - whips egg whites in 1/2 the time it took my KitchenAid. * Comfortable to hold - large handle and good weighting make it easy to hold for long periods. * Looks good on shelf or on counter - Subjective, of course, but the retractable cord makes it neater and easier on the eyes. Cons: * Switch and cord retraction mechanisms have that vague, raspy feel of cheap components about to break. They may last forever, but they feel shaky out of the box. * Chrome surface is over plastic, which usually scratches. Mine has resisted moderately forceful attempts to scratch it (using a scissors point). At least the plastic is light in weight. Incidentally, whatever Amazon's information may show, this mixer's box claims 240 watts of power.

This mixer has great power. Great for heavy batters, and fast mixing. But....it needs a slower 1st speed, a lot slower, just to get the dry ingredients in without spraying them all over the place, and for folding delicate ingredients. I like the cord wind up feature, sometimes a little hard to use but definitely worth the small effort for the neatness it provides. Also has a nice flat back so you can stand it up on the counter instead of hanging it off your mixing bowl while adding ingredients requiring 2 hands. Overall I'm glad I got it but there are certain things I cant use it for because the the super high 1st speed.

This was my most expensive hand mixer and the shortest lived! I have not even had it a couple of months and the motor burned out. I was whipping butter and noticed the smell then little black shavings flew into my bowl then it died! I am SHOCKED, I really had high expectations from this product.Very disappointed.

Dualit only lasted 6 months with light use (bought May 2010),

I was recently using the dualit and thinking ---as I was using it--- that I should go online and give it a positive review....a few minutes later (literally!!!) it seized and stopped working! I was just online right now to see about returning it, and so decided to write a review at the same time. Before that it was working great and I had no complaints. I should say that at almost the same time that I got this, I also got a VIKING stand mixer, which I've been using for all heavy mixing and much of my regular mixing, so the Dualit got lighter use than it otherwise would have....used primarily for things like whipping cream and some cookie batter type things. It seems like the place where the beaters are held are now misaligned and there is not any real power to turn them ---they will spin if in the air, but stop as soon as they get into a bowl with anything in it...and alo appears that the two beaters get caught on each other and then stop turning altogether...It was a more expensive beater than most and, although I wouldn't expect it to last forever, I certainly would expect more than 6 months! Will see if Amazon will refund....haven't finished looking into it. Sorry, can't recommend!

my only complaint is the quirky retractable cord which isn't always smooth, but that's minor....operationally, this is a great little hand mixer, more powerful than others in its class. this is the perfect back-up mixer when you don't need something like my Kitchen Aid Pro for big major baking projects.

Excellent machine for mixing, whipping, blending. There are a few design issues: 1. It is heavy and bulky. On a standard countertop, I (5ft, 6 in tall) need to hold the hand too high, at an awkward angle, to use the mixer. I suspect it was designed with male users in mind - or for use on lower countertops. My old mixer was much more comfortable. 2. Air intake is in the front of the mixer (a common flaw). The flour (or powdered sugar) will be pulled into the engine, and the mixer will last shorter it would otherwise. You must make sure the flour and sugar are mixed in before you start it. 3. The blending and whipping are performed exceptionally well, but the first speed is too fast.

I had a Cuisinart hand mixer which fell apart and was not powerful enough for some jobs. This Dualit Hand Mixer has power for anything, and is much better built than any mixer I have seen. The retractible cord works just fine, & I even like the box it came in...very substantial storage box that will last for years or decades. This is a product I can recommend with highest confidence!

Not Professional,

This review is from: Dualit 88520 Professional 5 Speed Hand Mixer, Chrome (Kitchen)
I waited for a long time after buying this product so that I could test it before writing a review. Every other mixer I purchased burned out after a year or so. I'm not sure how long I have had this one, maybe a year or two. This one also burned out. I was hoping that since it claimed to be "Professional" that is would be made with better parts etc. That is not the case. As far as I am concerned, it did no better than than any other mixer on the market. I would not recommend this mixer unless you use it for nothing more than whipping cream.

I spent weeks researching hand mixers comparing speed and country of origin. Several reviews I read elsewhere on the web raved that this item was made in Great Britain. WRONG - Made in China! On the first use, the cord would not retract. The chemical smell was overpowering as the mixer ran. So overpowering that I became lightheaded and ill. Yes, I am chemically sensitive but the smell still lingers in the house. The "chrome finish" is plastic. It's all plastic except for the beaters. VERY DISAPPOINTED and especially at the price. I expected more, much more for the price than what I got.

Not Advertised Correctly,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dualit 88520 Professional 5 Speed Hand Mixer, Chrome (Kitchen)
This hand mixer was not advertised correctly. I was looking for a high power hand mixer so I jumped when I saw that this mixer had a 300 watt motor. When it arrived and I opened the box, I saw that the motor was actually only 240 watts. I requested to return it as I felt paying $79.95 was more than I wanted to pay for a 240 watt hand mixer. It does appear to be a quality hand mixer, just I wanted more power than that.
