5.0 out of 5 stars Very good quality immersion blender
As some other reviews have mentioned, labeling this as a 500 watt unit is a bit inaccurate, as the US version is really only 320 watts. That does not detract from the fact that this is a very effective blender. 1.0 out of 5 stars Not 500 watts!
I wanted to share this with others who may order this for the 500watts of power - it is only 320 watts! I burned out a 250w blender recently, and ordered this thinking it was double power. It wasn't much heavier when I removed it from the box, so I looked at the motor, and it said 320w. Evidently the 500w was the power of the european/220v motor, even though the...

As some other reviews have mentioned, labeling this as a 500 watt unit is a bit inaccurate, as the US version is really only 320 watts. That does not detract from the fact that this is a very effective blender. I have used large commercial sized immersion blenders in a professional kitchen which would be overkill for home use, but the Dualit is perfect for my needs.

I have used it for emulsifying salad dressings and blending fruit smoothies. It quickly purees fairly thick soups (gallon-sized quantities in a large stock pot) with no stalling or overheating.

I highly recommend it.

Needless to say, I returned it. I can't really rate it, just say it isn't what it says it is.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sent it back, February 20, 2007
This review is from: Dualit 88860 500-Watt Immersion Hand Blender with Pulse, Chrome (Kitchen)
After a minute of use, this unit was hot to the touch. You would think that 500 watts of power would last longer than that! I sent it back and Amazon has a great return policy. I was able to purchase a different unit quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little blender!, February 7, 2011

This review is from: Dualit 88860 500-Watt Immersion Hand Blender with Pulse, Chrome (Kitchen)
I've had this little stick blender for over a year now, and it's still going strong. I've used it for making smoothies, ice blended drinks, soups, whipping egg whites, making whipped cream, and even for making lotions and conditioners (very thick and creamy). I use it on a very regular basis, nearly every day. And, while some reviewers have noted that it gets hot to the touch after only a minute of use, I have not had that problem with mine. It take 3-5 minutes of running it on turbo for it to get hot to the touch. Once it reaches that point, then I have to let it cool off, and run it in pulses if I'm still in the middle of a lotion or soaping project. I've been very pleased with it's performance and would definitely buy a second one if I were doing more soaping projects than what I'm doing now. I would want one for soaping, and one for cooking. It's been a great product, and I hope to have it around for several more years of hard use :)

Incidentally, I've had a Braun stick blender and a Thunder stick previously and neither one of them came close to the quality of this one. This one blends ice and fruit so smoothly that it is better than my KitchenAid blender. No ice chunks. Just smooth, creamy drinks. Did I mention how very pleased I am with this product? :D

5.0 out of 5 stars Searched long and hard!!, December 6, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dualit 88860 500-Watt Immersion Hand Blender with Pulse, Chrome (Kitchen)
Love, love, love this immersion blender!! Have been using it for a few weeks now and it has been everything I hoped for. The wattage, which in North America translates to 320 watts (so I hear) is more than enough to plow throw big chunks of frozen fruit for the smoothest smoothies I have ever made. My family may be getting a little tired of the liquid diet around here; no soup is safe from being pureed! I had originally been about to break down and buy the very expensive Bamix blender at Williams-Sonoma, as it does have very good reviews, but the unguarded blade made me very nervous. As it turns out, I did find a review from someone who said to absolutely not use the Bamix with Le Creuset pans as the blade will chip the enamel. Well, I always make soup in a Le Creuset pan, so that was out. I had looked at many different blenders and was tired of trying to figure what the wattage was for most of them. Companies are just saying "with a powerful motor" with no commitment re wattage. I finally decided to try the Dualit in spite of the many complaints about it. Mine doesn't overheat; hasn't died (yet!) and is ergonomically fine. I do use two hands often to hold it because it is very powerful and tries to suction itself to the bottom of the pan. Would not hesitate to recommend this blender!!

2.0 out of 5 stars a weak blender, April 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dualit 88860 500-Watt Immersion Hand Blender with Pulse, Chrome (Kitchen)
The first unit I recevied did not work at all. The vendor sent me another, and I find that even if you hold the button, the unit works intermittently. Holding in the "burt" button does work, but I have to wonder if that might burn out the motor. It feels heavy, and regardless of the picture, the top is not flat, so you cannot rest the unit with the blade side up. This replaced a 15 year old $15 Rival which was an all-around better unit right up until its death.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worked good... for a while, February 16, 2011
This review is from: Dualit 88860 500-Watt Immersion Hand Blender with Pulse, Chrome (Kitchen)
I am a professional chef and I bought this to replace a Waring commercial stick blender. I bought it for home use. I do not use it often but when I use it, it tends to be for large quantities such as two gallons of sauce or similar products that would be too much hassle to break down in a traditional blender.

I've had the unit for a bit more than a year and it had worked perfectly until yesterday. The shaft seems to have frozen up causing the motor to overheat. I disassembled it and found the shaft feeds through an silicone gasket. I could find no obvious points of lubrication that had gone dry. I tried cleaning it, oiling it, and reassembling several times with no luck. The shaft turns freely when disassembled and freezes up when i put it back together.

I was very happy with how it worked when it worked but now I am undecided on buying this brand again. I think it should have lasted more than one year, especially with the sporadic use I put it through.

I think I will go back to the small Waring model I used to own (and that also broke after a couple years).

5.0 out of 5 stars On par with Bamix, February 18, 2011
This review is from: Dualit 88860 500-Watt Immersion Hand Blender with Pulse, Chrome (Kitchen)
I researched immersion blenders for a week- ALL of them. Was ready to buy the Bamix for $130 (+tax = $140) at William Sonoma when I zeroed in on this Dualit (English) or the LeEquip (French). Both have high power and 9k-16k RPMS. If the RPMs are not mentioned, don't go there unless you don't need power. I need to mix cottage cheese with flax oil. Neither the $50 Kitchenaid or Cuisinart could do the job. The Bamix is great, but the Dualit at $75 out the door (from Abt) works just as well. Easy stick on and off, not so high as to give arm aches, pretty lightweight, easy cleanup. It even has a turbo button which I haven't needed.

1.0 out of 5 stars burned out, May 2, 2010
This review is from: Dualit 88860 500-Watt Immersion Hand Blender with Pulse, Chrome (Kitchen)
This stick blender burned out several months after I bought it, the first time I used it to blend a thick soup. The cost of returning it to England for repair or replacement made that an unattractive option. I bought this because the company has an excellent reputation for stoves, ovens, etc. Maybe the fact that the small appliances are actually designed for European current is a problem.
