5.0 out of 5 stars Simply, the best Ska CD I know
If you want to give someone a great sampling of Ska, make them a tape. If you want to give someone a sample of how great Ska can be, buy them this CD. Simple. Listen to the tracks; it's that good all the way through.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad
This cd is allright. I like the end where they put up part of their live performance in LA. To me, that part of this album stands out the most.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yeah, rude boy!!, November 7, 2003
This review is from: Dub 56 (Audio CD)
This album is in my top 10 favorite Ska cds, if I were on the proverbial desert island (with electricity and a stereo) I would have this in my three cds with me, along with Skarmageddon Vol I, and III. Better yet, on the "Big Brother" television show, winning "Head of Household" this is the cd I would want waiting for me in my room, and then all of America can know the magic of the Toasters. Horn section on the opening track "Direction", just about perfect, gives you that nerd-gasm , moving along "Mona" "Dub 56" and "Legal Shot" will also get you rockin' and car-dancin' just like that girl in that commercial. On a side note, buy "Ska the Third Wave" to get a really awesome re-mix of "Dub 56" You must comply! The power of Ska compels you!

4.0 out of 5 stars High Flying Fun, June 9, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Dub 56 (Audio CD)
Overall a good release by the Toasters, Dub 56 features a lot of the great charts you'll hear when they play live. In that vein, this CD features a number of live tracks at the end of the disc, including such faves as "Mona" and "Weekend in L.A." This disc features a good mix of lead vocals between Coolie Ranx and Bucket Hingley, so fans of either one should be pleased. An especially nice touch is the slick rendition of "A Night in Tunisia," originally written by Dizzy Gillespie, a chart that on this album receives the smooth treatment of the Toasters' horn section. I recommend this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget the microwave, Bring out the Toasters!, August 12, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Dub 56 (Audio CD)
Energetic ska that combines jazz allusions ("Tunisia" is a cover of Dizzy Gillespie's "A night in Tunisia"), reggae-ska-groove ("Dancin'"), and most of all, upbeat and melodically creative tunes like "Mona" and "Marlboro Man". This is very refreshing compared to the usual monotonous ska records. Get it and start Dancin'.

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD is incredible- a must for any fan of modern ska!, February 25, 1999
This review is from: Dub 56 (Audio CD)
Wow! As a true ska fan, I must say that Dub 56 did not come up at all short. This CD transcended my expectations with incredible rhythms, great horns, strong vocals and unbelievable big-band synergy. The Toasters really know how to play the ska. They give it a modern flavor without denying the music its roots. The Live in LA tracks at the end give any rude boy or girl the feeling of an energy-filled ska show all over again. Coolie Ranx toasts well on several tracks. Great job NYC Ska Kings!

5.0 out of 5 stars Raise your glasses and make a Toast!!, June 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Dub 56 (Audio CD)
Perhaps the unsung heroes of the ska scene, the Toasters have been around longer than Gwen Stephani's 15 minutes of fame. With a tight horn section and great music all around, Dub 56 is a sure fire hit. "Legal Shot" drives the feet onto a skankin' frenzy, as well as others. By combining traditional sounds of ska, second wave/UK ska, jazz, and something of thier own, the Toasters hit the mark and make you want to put on your pin stripe suit and two shoes and go out for a pint and skank the night away. A must for ska fans and a great all around listen.
