I gave this album three because I have to rate it something, but it isn't really a fair rating. At some level I am a fan of most everything that Doughty has done, but especially the solo stuff. I am not a fan or officianado of dance and techno. This is a dance and techno album. I don't really like it. It's a 1 in my own rating system, but keep in mind I bought it hoping for Doughty's hook rhythm and some choice words strung together with a regular-guy voice. I did this despite the fact that Mike clearly states that it isn't that type of album. So, good for Mike for stepping out and trying new things, and good for people who enjoy a more techno approach. I also tried something new by buying this album, and now it's back to my knitting. Good for me.

BOTTOM LINE: KNOW WHAT YOU ARE BUYING WITH THIS ALBUM!

I haven't listened to the album, but to reiterate what the first reviewer said, no singing Mike. This is from Doughty himself:

My electro/weird/large-beat/cut-up samples album DUBIOUS LUXURY is out! Today! Right now! Let me say again: I don't sing on Dubious Luxury. There's sampled vocalsfrom Joanne Kyger, Todd Colby, Erica Livingston, Young Jean Lee, Becky Yamamoto, and--perhaps most interestingly to people who listen to Soul Coughing--Rachel Benbow Murdy, aka the ghostly voice on "Janine".

(Since I wish someone would have been here ahead of me to verify what the samples above should tell you...) All cuts here are dance tracks w/o lyrics (just samples). If you are looking for 40+ mins of dance club vibe this is the disc for you.
