From the Author

This is the most comprehensive, beautifully illustrated book ever published on the Federal Duck Stamp Program. It is much more than just a "stamp" book. The first third of the book focuses on the conservation history of the United States and the factors that led the federal government to take action to conserve dwindling populations of migratory waterfowl. Anyone interested in environmental/conservation history or the politics of wildlife protection should find this fascinating. Another third of the book focuses on the duck stamp art contest, often referred to as the "richest art competition in the world." Over twenty of the winning artists were interviewed for this section. The remainder of the book covers duck stamps and stamp collecting in depth. This includes information on grading a stamp's condition, how the stamps are produced from start to finish, stamp values, condition, and profiles of some of the great collectors. With over 300 full-color images! adding life to the text, this book is not only very interesting it is also beautiful. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

I grew up near the coasts of New York and Connecticut, and since an early age I was fascinated by the natural world, especially the ocean. I spent many days wandering the beaches on the edge of Long Island Sound and the Atlantic, collecting seashells and exploring tidepools. Throughout my career, which included jobs as an environmental consultant and an environmental policy analyst, one thing remained constant--I enjoyed writing and telling stories, many of which have a connection to the natural world. And that's why I started writing books--to share the stories that I find most intriguing. My most recent book, Fur, Fortune, and Empire: the Epic History of the Fur Trade in America (W. W. Norton, 2010), a national bestseller, was chosen by New West, The Seattle Times, and The Rocky Mountain Land Library as one of the top non-fiction books of 2010. It also won the 2011 James P. Hanlan Book Award, given by the New England Historical Association, and was awarded first place in the Outdoor Writers Association of America, Excellence in Craft Contest. My last book book, Leviathan: The History of Whaling in America (W. W. Norton, 2007), was selected as one of the best nonfiction books of 2007 by The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, and The Providence Journal. Leviathan was also chosen by Amazon.com's editors as one of the 10 best history books of 2007. Leviathan garnered the the 23rd annual (2007) L. Byrne Waterman Award, given by the New Bedford Whaling Museum, for outstanding contributions to whaling research and history. Leviathan also received the 2007 John Lyman Award for U. S. Maritime History, given by the North American Society for Oceanic History, was named an Honors Book in nonfiction for the 8th annual Massachusetts Book Awards (2008-2009), and was awarded a silver medal for history in the Independent Publisher Book Awards (2008).

My next book is When America First Met China: An Exotic Tale of Tea, Drugs, and Money During the Age of Sail, which will be published by Liveright, and imprint of W. W. Norton, in September 2012. Everyone focuses on our current relationship with China, but this book takes you back to when it all began.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Duck Stamp Story Review, April 16, 2000

This review is from: The Duck Stamp Story (Paperback)
This is an incredible book for anyone who is interested in ducks, stamps, history, art, conservation, collectables, or Americana. There's the history of duck stamps as it relates to the entire conservation movement. There are interviews with famous people who are themselves duck stamp collectors and avid conservationists. There are beautiful photographs and artwork of past and present duck stamps, as well as other honorable mentions in the annual duck stamp contests. This book is just chock full of information and illustrations. The author has done a great job of wholistically researching the topic into every tangent of related interests. It is the ultimate coffee table book since there is something to interest just about anyone. You'll find that you meant to just browse through it, when before you know it you've read a whole chapter!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book, Excellent Read, July 15, 2000

This review is from: The Duck Stamp Story (Hardcover)
This book is beautiful, interesting, and a pleasure to read. I don't hunt, collect stamps or wildlife art, but this is a great book. I am truly enjoying it. I especially like the section on conservation, which details the history of water fowl degradation and protection in the United States.

I have never seen my husband so entralled by a book before. I can never get him to sit down for 5 seconds but on Christmas morning, he forgot the rest of his gifts and sat and read this book! I was amazed! It contains history with great pictures and facts and he was actually enjoying himself while reading it!
I highly recommend this book for any person interested in ducks, duck stamps or duck hunting.
