Book Description

August 14, 2007
GET SHORTY MEETS THE BIG LEBOWSKI IN THIS ROLLICKING MODERN COMEDY BY A CLEVER AND HILARIOUS NEWCOMER.

Meet Wally Moscowitz. His day job is top secret. As ghostwriter for Oral B, the most famous gangsta rapper in the world, Wally is the real mastermind behind Godz-Illa Records' best-selling artist, and the best-kept secret in the Industry. But if word gets out about Wally's true profession, Godz-Illa's kajillion-dollar rap empire will be sunk, and Wally will be dead meat.

When Wally comes home one particularly bizarre afternoon to find a ransom note and his best friend and dog, Dr. Barry Schwartzman, missing, Wally goes to great lengths to stop the dognappers while keeping the big secret under wraps. He must, if he wants to walk away with his job, not to mention his life, intact.

The hunt for Dr. Schwartzman and the blackmailing thug who is trying to reveal hip-hop's biggest conspiracy becomes a wild-goose chase in which everyone becomes a suspect: Sue Schadenfreude, Wally's girlfriend, who makes a pretty penny massaging Barbra Streisand's papillon, Yenta; Pardeep Vishvatma, Wally's neighbor, who keeps a watchful eye on all the suspicious characters lurking about the hood; Jerry Silver, Wally's slick-rick, self-styled superagent; Abraham "Dandy" Lyons, Wally's boss and Godz-Illa's CEO-badass with Suge Knight's street cred and Tony Soprano's "friends"; Jem, the fiery, achingly familiar vixen who steals Wally's heart; Yo Yo Pa and Teddy Bizzle, Oral B's entourage; and the mysterious mob crew: Five-two Lou, Six-seven Kevin, and Balsamic Vinny, who show up when Wally needs them most.

Duck Duck Wally is a hilarious romp through the absurdities of Los Angeles, the bombastic details of hip-hop culture, and a day in the life of what was supposed to be the painfully ordinary existence of Wally Moscowitz.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Rotter relies heavily on black street slang for comic effect in his zany debut, starting with chizapter 1. Wally Moscowitz, a self-described frumpy, kinda chubby little boring man living in Los Angeles, writes lyrics for rapper Oral B, the current star of Godz-Illa Records. When not penning lyrics full of four-letter words for Oral, Wally also writes dirty bedtime fables for adults, examples of which are sprinkled throughout the novel. Godz-Illa CEO Abraham Dandy Lyons has assured Wally that if anyone ever discovers that Oral B isn't writing his own lyrics, Wally will end up in a ditch. Soon, Wally's dog gets 'napped, goons are trying to kill Wally and everyone rushes to and fro against a backdrop of glitzy L.A. bizness thuggery. Rotter's a talented writer, though readers who find variations of the same joke funny enough to support the silly plot will be most rewarded.

Review

"Gabe Rotter will revolutionize the current political landscape with this authoritative, influential analysis of America's policy agenda. Okay, maybe not. But Wally Moscowitz for President."

-- Arianna Huffington, cofounder and editor in chief of The Huffington Post and author of On Becoming Fearless

"I thought I was funny. But after reading Duck Duck Wally, I'm not funny at all. Gabe Rotter is. (Even his name sounds funny.)"

-- Chuck Barris, author of The Big Question and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind

"I thoroughly enjoyed the hilarious, original, and very strange Duck Duck Wally. Gabe Rotter is hugely talented, extremely funny, and, I suspect, a complete lunatic -- a lunatic who sure can rhyme. Read this book fo shizzle."

-- Lisa Lutz, author of The Spellman Files

"Duck Duck Wally brilliantly exploits the absurdities of modern pop culture. Rotter's menagerie of oddball characters will have readers hooked from page one."

-- Brad Listi, author of Attention. Deficit. Disorder

"In addition to being a kick-ass debut novel, Duck Duck Wally is a complete abs workout that will tone and tighten your entire core! I haven't laughed this hard in a long time."

-- Will Clarke, author of The Worthy and Lord Vishnu's Love Handles --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars laughs aplenty, August 14, 2007
This review is from: Duck Duck Wally: A Novel (Hardcover)
I'm not really a huge fiction reader or one to post amazon reviews, but I work for a magazine and we received this book a few months ago for review. It has been passed around our office non-stop since we got it. My co-worker INSISTED that I read it, and I am very glad that i did. It was the funniest and most compulsively readable novel I have read, maybe ever. Just so much fun. i hope it does well because i want more!

5.0 out of 5 stars For the Dawgs and this ol' hen, November 8, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Duck Duck Wally is totally a guy's book. It's full of rap and violence and guy imagery and masculine concepts of what's cool and funny. It has Mother-Goose-type porn in it, for crying out loud. So how did a middle aged hen like my self come to love it so much? Easy - I was tricked, pulled in by the voice of the unassuming, frumpy, wallflower that is Wally.

See, I know Wally. You know him too. Everybody knows a Wally.

He's the guy in the yearbook no one remembers, the dude at work you walk by without noticing, the cousin who still sleeps in your aunt's basement, the brother of your best friend that you can never remember the name of, the driver of the broken down heap blocking the intersection, the guy who works in the back or the basement or whatever.

He is the average Joe that nothing much ever really happens to, the representation of all the faceless people that seem only to exist to witness the rest of the world's great accomplishments, which means he's me and, statistically speaking, he's probably you too.

Even though this guy is nobody, even though he's not good looking, even though he's a human doormat, even though he smells like bacon fat and it looks like he's slept in that t-shirt for three days straight, you'll jostle the crowd to get closer to him because this guy who never has anything to say worth saying has a story to tell, a you've-got-to-be-kidding-me story, a leaves you slack jawed and shaking your head story, a too-amazing-to-be-true story, and even though it is - it is fiction after all - you're going to hang on to every word he says because it happened to "this guy," this ordinary guy, this chubby-little-white-putz-that-writes-rap guy, and because it's the best damn story you've heard in a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Love this book!, July 21, 2010
This review is from: Duck Duck Wally: A Novel (Hardcover)
This book had me literally laughing out loud every where. On the train heading into the city a woman actually asked me what book I was reading that had me laughing so much. The way Gabe writes is amazingly honest to how your every day person would think in the same situation. Example; in the car with Oral B and his brothers. I was lol'ing at the entire situation.
I would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for a quick entertaining read (finished it in 2 days, I love this kind of humor)
