Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1-At the beginning of this very easy reader, the ducks are having fun playing in the mud. Soon some men load them into cages, which they then put in trucks. Unfortunately, the vehicles get stuck. While the men try to get them out of the muck, the ducks have good luck when a flock of ducks passes by and releases the caged creatures. In the end, the trucks are still stuck but the ducks are back in the muck. With only one to three words on most pages, the rhyming text is suitable for brand new readers, and the large cartoon illustrations help to tell the story.-Barb Lawler, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA

Great book, simple and fun. My 5-year old was reading it in no time, and now he loves to impress everyone on how well he can read. Can't wait for the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Hit in The Toddler Room!!!!, July 18, 2001

I am a co-teacher in a daycare with 18-27 month olds and this book is a definite favorite!! They ask to read it about a hundred times a day and just love the "quack quack" and "vroom vroom" sound effects we make to go along with the story. Some of them can just about read it to us all by themselves just by hearing it so often as well as the clear pictures. They love knowing where the missing boot is, and counting the trucks, as well as identyfing the colors. Great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written for teaching phonics, December 3, 2011
This review is from: Ducks in Muck (Hardcover)
My daughter is learning to read through a phonics-first method. We do drill, but it's hard to find books for leisure reading that are written in decodable phonics for kids who are just starting phonics instead of being written for instruction in sight-reading. This book is a great choice. Nearly all of the words are from the "uck" word family. It usually has only 1 to 4 words per page, but most of the pictures are complex enough to discourage guessing. My daughter loves the pictures, and she loves that she can sound out almost all of the words and read it herself! Additionally, she finds it an entertaining read, which is rare in beginner books. The author did a great job.
