5.0 out of 5 stars classic punk rock album
Before he was in "15" Jeff Ott fronted the incredible, blistering punk rock band "Chrimpshrine." Most amazing is that these songs were written and recorded when the bandmembers were teenagers. Nobody has come along as far as I'm concerned and shown a pair of vocal pipes like Ott had. These songs are moaned, screamed and delivered with such...

1.0 out of 5 stars Calling yourself Punk isn't an excuse to not be able to play your instruments
I'm sorry, but this is no classic. It's not even music. Really. I've never received any amount of guitar training, but I do have a guitar I bought for $4.00 at the junk store, and I STILL sound better than these little (...) when I play. It pisses me off that people think being "Punk" is an excuse to make sh*t like this that isn't even music. Crimpshrine has no focus and...

These songs are moaned, screamed and delivered with such intensity and rawness, it's mindblowing. It's suprising these guys were so young when this material was recorded. This is one of the best Lookout! records ever released and it's a complete original. It's very intensive, raw and edgy but it rocks.

5.0 out of 5 stars classic east bay punk, August 7, 1998

This is a classic cd you should definitly listen to. Crimpshrine is the inspiration for many awesome punk bands such as Operation Ivy. They sound kind of like an angrier OpIvy without the ska element.. It takes a little while to get used to the hoarse vocals and harsh sound, but you will eventually grow to love them. Also, the drummer is somewhat fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most "substance" records ever!, July 17, 2005
By
This review is from: Duct Tape Soup (Audio CD)
This record is not for someone who is into commercialized music like REM or even OFFSPRING. For those of us who like to question who we are and the world around us, this is the record of choice. How could one say that this band has no direction. Just listen to the songs "Construction" or "Wake Up." If someone doesn't understand the lyrics then how can they knock it.
One of the best "punk" bands ever which also spawned the even more social minded band "FIFTEEN". You should look into them. Vocalist Jeff Ott and his message for simple life with less pollution and violence has reached so many people because of these 2 bands. They're a little rough around the edges but the great percussions and catchy riffs make up for the "harsh" sound.
Crimpshrine helped give birth to the legendary "East Bay" sound along with other bands such as "GREENDAY", "CRINGER", and most notably "ORERATION IVY" which of whom was the pioneer who fused punk and ska to form a fresh sound that can still be heard in many contemporary bands.
Crimpshrine will never be known for being a " no direction" band. If anyone does think that then go find a lyric sheet for help because you'd be blown away by how much substance and meaning they exume in their music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crimpshrine - Essence of Punk, November 26, 1999
This review is from: Duct Tape Soup (Audio CD)
It would be far too easy to say that Crimpshrine has no comparison to any other bands, but seriously, there are few bands that you can really use to draw clear distinct definitions from what is now the ubiquitous 'punk' meaning. Listening to this band without knowing their history or their importance to the entire 80's punk movement is like shooting yourself in the foot. I've been lucky enough to play a large part in the development of the mainland Chinese punk scene, and most of the music we've brought over was largely the punk classics, such as Crimpshrine. Luckily we gradually got people off the kurt kobain addiction onto something with much more substance... no pun intended.

It pisses me off that people think being "Punk" is an excuse to make sh*t like this that isn't even music. Crimpshrine has no focus and no skill. But worst of all: They have no message (somebody tell me what these guys stand for, because I can't tell from their "music"). That is unjustifiable, especially in the Punk realm. Want some hardcore or indie Punk from the Cali region? Then get The Offspring's self-titled debut. Yeah, it's raw, but it has amazing musicianship coupled with lyrics that actually fu*cking matter. Bryan & co. ought to kick these boys' asses for besmirching the name of Punk Rock.

3.0 out of 5 stars east bay roots/no talent, July 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Duct Tape Soup (Audio CD)
i bought this cd a little over a year ago and really didnt know what to make of it. its some of the first "new school" punk that we know today but the group lacks talent especialy the singer. his voice seems to go back and forth from a normal punk voice and a really annoying hoarse voice. the songs have no melody. the only good ones are pretty mess and free will. only get this cd if you want to see the roots of opiv.
