I bought this album early in my college career and became infamous for it. It was first heard at our parties, and people kept asking us "did Outkast do a new, more mellow CD about smoking?"
NO. This isn't Outkast, but it's great nonetheless. Personally, there are a few tracks I could live without (I'm not a fan of "Show Em" of "ligole Bips"), but the standout tracks of "Mo fa Me," "Do what you want," "See What I can Pull" and even "Georgy" quickly made me forget about the tracks I don't care for much.

This is down south, slow drawl, light up some Coughee music. It's laid back, mellow, and just the right tone for chillin, getting ready to go out or just playin at the party. Most of the tracks are good and everyone I've shown it to has asked me "who is that."

I've already had this CD stolen from me on 3 different occassions and it's been worth buying again each time. If you're not sure if you'll like the album, but you like Down south rap, buy Scarface's "My Homies" album, as a couple of the tracks are on there and are just a fine sample of the great things in store for this album.

I love it and almost 6 years later, it's STILL bumpin in my car regularly.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Simple Truth., July 25, 2006
This review is from: Dude (Audio CD)
This is one of the best Hip Hop Albums of all time. It is definately one of the most slept on albums. Devin will always be underappreciated. He does not talk about Bling, Guns, Money, Shooting or all of the unimportant things in life that the music Industry is making artist shove down the young African Americans throat. The Subjectts are more down to earth and simple. Now some are explicit but they are all things that the average person can relate to. All of the songs are delivered through his ultra smooth flow that make rapping seem easy. You will catch yourself laughing through the entire CD because he says the things that most of you are scared to say. Bottom line is Devin is SIMPLY super talented and provided us with a Classic CD in the Dude. Its 8 years Old and I still Never leave home without it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smokin Tunes Fron The Dude, June 13, 2006
By
This review is from: Dude (Audio CD)
Devin's 1998 debut is filled with such an entertainment value ranging from the beats to the lyrical content. The beats on most of the songs are awesome. Generally, they are laid back Texas deep G-Funk with a nice bass to them. He can flow tight and his delivery is funny and clever. The way he dsescribes his sexcapades, his obsession with dank, and even him boo boo'n will get you crackin' up throughout the album! Devin also has some deeper tracks about life and making choices in songs like "Alright," and "Do What You Wanna Do," and how people can be so scrutinizing and critical in "Write And Wrong." The guitar riffs on "One Day At A Time" "Alright" "Write And Wrong" and half of the other tracks are hella funky, so the album will also get you into a relaxed mood. Anyone into Old School Dirty South rap, West Coast rap, or G-Funk will have instant satisfaction with The Dude, but anyone into good, keep-it-real, witty rap, will dig this underground classic as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rap's Best Kept Secret, April 10, 2008
This review is from: Dude (Audio CD)
Devin the Dude has remained an icon in the underground hip-hop scene for many years now. This smokin' hot self-titled album earned him the title as "Rap's Best Kept Secret". Well the secret's out, as Dev fresh off Rap-A-Lot Records has hit the Billboard charts for the first time in his career with "Smoke Sessions Volume 1" definitely worth Smokin' to. Much love to the Dude!

5.0 out of 5 stars DEVIN AT HIS BEST, October 23, 2008
This review is from: Dude (Audio CD)
Most people weren't up on The Dude in the 90's, but this album was the illest thing to come out of H-Town in a long time and still is better than anything that has come out since. The beats on this album are so damn fresh its ridiculous. I got To tha x-treme and just tryin to live after this album and neither are quite as good in terms of overall quality. There are a TON of good tracks on this album:

1. The Dude- one of the best ever. Devin's theme song. Pretty much exemplifies what the Dude is all about.
2. Sticky Green- Ranks up there with "Doobie Ashtray" from Just Tryin to Live and the title track from Takin it 2 tha x-treme as one of the best songs to get blazed to ever made.
4. Do what you wanna do- great message. Nice smooth beat
5. Mo fa me- Hilarious concept. "Parents, I'm not tellin ya children to smoke ya see, cause if they just no then its Mo Fa Me..." Good beat too.
8. See What I can Pull- my presonal favorite. Excellent chorus and beat and Devins at his best lyrically.
11. Boo Boo'n- real nice beat, once again hilarious.
16. I can't quit- I think anyone who has an office job and smokes and drinks can relate slightly to this song. One of a kind beat on this one.
17. Georgy- head knocking beat, Devin laces the track with some pimpin vocals and lyrics.

Thats 8 GREAT songs (as good as anything Devin has done since) and the other ones are also just as good as anything he's doing now with landing gear and the last album waiting to inhale. If you like any bit of Devin you've heard, you owe it to yourself to get The Dude, his best album by far.

I originally became a fan of Devin after hearing Lacville '79. However, everytime I listen to one of his albums, I get overwhelmed by the talent and skill he shows on each of his offerings. Devin is truly a talented dude, and is easily one of the most entertaining rappers currently out today. The fact that he has lasted in the game over 10 years is no mistake. This man is truly talented.

Now as for the album "The Dude", this is easily his best album to date. It is the Illmatic of the South if you will. No other southern album, save Scarfaces "My Homies" will entertain you the way that "The Dude" will. And what makes it better is that he talks about real stuff that everyday people can relate to. None of this super braggart, or drug story nonsense. Just simple laid back rhymes over G-funk beats.

Get this album NOW, If you haven't already. And if you already own it, BUY IT AGAIN. A great album from a great southern artist.
