Billy Crystal might have starred in a hit film (
City Slickers) on the subject, but there are real urbanites out there who make an annual ritual of herding livestock, clearing sagebrush, and riding horseback through carpets of wildflowers. It's all part of the fun of playing cowboy for a week or two at any one of a number of dude ranches across the U.S. where busy investment brokers, doctors, and others can get in touch with frontier life and refresh their spirits. Produced by Wyoming Public Television,
Dude Ranch Days describes the almost accidental creation of the vacation ranch in the late 19th century, at a time when some of the most ambitious ranching families, settling onto some truly harsh terrain, were more than happy to have extra, uncomplaining hands around (particularly those willing to pay for the privilege). These days, a hard day out on the trail is likely to be rewarded with a few creature comforts (hot tubs, diet-shattering dinners). But the important thing is that the genteel visitors--some who have been returning to the same ranches each year for more than a half-century--get what they need: quality time with four-legged beasts, vigorous tasks to get the blood pumping, and such. Gorgeously photographed, the production skips around from America's Southwest to the northern Rockies, and everyone onscreen turns out to be worth knowing. Hosted by Lindsay Wagner.
