So Jan Gordon came to Deer River, with its dude ranches deep in the Rockies, in order to thrust aside all the unpleasant memories of the past and rediscover herself.

He is nicer than I thought he would be, she thought, as they pulled up in front of the house. Helping her out of the car, he took her hand. "Come in and have dinner with me," he said.
