Comprehensive and hilarious,
This review is from: Dude, That's Rude!: (Get Some Manners) (Laugh & Learn) (Paperback)
This book was perfect for my 9-year-old, who really enjoyed the funny sections but also learned a lot from the informative text. It covers everything - from cell phones to dinner table manners to even "fartiquette" - and has full-color art as well so it was fun shared reading. An excellent resource for easing kids' fears about social situations and for promoting mannered behavior in today's kids.

Good Manners Are Still Important,

Did you know that 8 out of 10 adults say that a lack of manners is a serious problem today? I will certainly say, "I'm one of those 8 out of 10." When I was a pre-teen my mother gave me a book on manners and insisted I read it. That was several years ago and society has changed a lot since then, but knowing how to act right and respect others is still important.Recently, I found this little book, Dude, That's Rude, on Amazon and thought how much fun it would be to review it on my children's book blog. So I ordered it and I wasn't disappointed. It may not be Amy Vanderbilt, but it's "way cool" and gets the good manners point across to children and adults alike. The illustrations alone will hold anyone's attention, and the way good manners are presented by the written word speaks to both pre-teens and teens. It addresses everyday issues like: power words and words that show you might be a clod; how to treat one's family; good school manners; and even mall manners. It discusses just about anything a kid needs to know about social skills. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and will suggest it to my readers, family members, and friends.

I have two boys, ages 10 & 12, and they got a real kick out of this book. I did too! It is a good overview of manners of all kinds, but in a humorous setting. I would recommend it to anyone with kids who need a "brush up" on manners. Very well written.

While very good in some areas; I do wish this book, that is to be used for teaching manners, was not so crude. I suppose you could say this book is an oxymoron; a crude book of manners. Here are a few words the book recommends a child use in place of swear words...gosh!, darn it!, dang it!, etc.; which in my opinion, should not be used either. The book calls passing gas, "butt blasts" which many children will pick up on and also start using. The books "Manners Made Easy" and "Manners Made Easy for Teens" are both much better books for teaching this subject. Although with some editing, you would be able to use this book.

I found this book a little too "worldly" for my lower elementary students. There is nothing too out of line and the manners taught are terrific, but the sarcasm and writing written to attract the young crowd was a little out of place for the under 9 crowd.

Gets attention,
This review is from: Dude, That's Rude!: (Get Some Manners) (Laugh & Learn) (Paperback)
I used this little book with my four grandkids ages 11, 10, 9 and 8. They enjoyed it and even used some of the practices in front of me! It is written in kid style, but pulls no punches. Just what this grandmother was looking for.

I have a 4 year old so I was a bit premature getting this book. It is for older kids, like maybe 8. It does address many of the things kids need to learn but people don't talk about. There are pages on Burps, farts, power words and P.U. words. How to politely decline food that looks yucky More on interrupting, hosting and guesting. Lots of good practical tips. I recommend it for older kids. It's the kind of thing they should read themselves not have a parent read it to them. It is written clear and to the point without a lot of goofy stuff. There are illustrations that add a little zest to the point.

Great book for elementary school counselors!,
This review is from: Dude, That's Rude!: (Get Some Manners) (Laugh & Learn) (Paperback)
Dude, That's Rude! was one of the first books I purchased as a new elementary school counselor. I was looking for a funny book that I could use in a classroom setting to discuss and have conversations with students on manners in many different environments. I'd set aside a half hour lesson with the teacher, read a few pages myself, then have the kids take turns reading pages as well. The kids and I laughted out loud with the pictures (especially the secion on body manners with the picture of the boy chasing his sister with a booger!) and stories from the books, but I also found the kids learned many valuable and real-life lessons about how to act and behave like responsible young adults. A few years ago my principal observed me for a formal evaluation while teaching lessons from this book, and even he volunteered to read and enjoy the funny stories and tips (and I received a great review!)!I highly recommend this book for elementary counselors and teachers, for a fun way to discuss appropriate manners and behaviors. I may have to buy another copy soon as mine is starting to fray and come apart from using it so often! :)

I got this for my 9 year old step son and was wondering how to open the subject with him. I just laid the book somewhere and he ended up picking it up and reading it, then he also took it on a road trip with us and kept telling us things he learned. It was great! So far, I'm not seeing a huge difference in his manners, but at least I have something to refer to and can say, "remember what your book says?"

I have been searching for the perfect manners book for tweens for some time and have bought a lot of books. None of them was quite what I was looking for and did not cover the fundamentals(hygiene, burping, farting) as well as basic etiquette. This book does! It's small, slim, a quick read and if you need to provide a tween with remedial help on the subject, just buy this book.
