Witty, deadpan captioning gives this small-format photo-essay about a Jack Russell terrier its outsize personality. Dudley knows he will never be a large dog, but realizes he has a chance to become "an athlete dog." Crisp, snappy photos show Dudley in "training": he "start[s] weight-lifting" (he is seen carrying preposterously large sticks, in classic Jack Russell fashion), swimming, walking and running in all seasons and even doing "chin-ups" (he is seen dangling by his tenacious jaws from sticks and poles). He even flies (i.e., he sails through the air to catch Frisbees and tennis balls). Dudley also discovers that he's larger than some humans, such as the new baby whom he regards adoringly in a tub at home and whose carriage he guards outdoors. PreSchool-Grade 2-At birth, a Jack Russell terrier named Dudley looks "more like a mouse than a dog." As he grows, he realizes that he will never be large, but resolves to at least be athletic. He goes into training, lifting heavy sticks, going on long walks, and swimming on hot summer days. He loves to run, and he does stretching exercises and chin-ups throughout the year. Then one day, the pup discovers that he is able to fly through the air and catch Frisbees and tennis balls. He is strong and happy, and doesn't care about his size. Despite the excellent color photographs of a Jack Russell terrier demonstrating Dudley's feats throughout the seasons, the story is slight and disappointing. Still, young animal lovers may enjoy the clear, humorous pictures.

My kids love Dudley almost as much as they adore our JRT. Good storyline, easy to follow, and wonderful photography. Really shows off the JRT personality traits (tenacity, speed, athleticism) rarely seen by those who aren't owned by one of the breed- excellent book!

This book is the perfect showcase of the Jack Russell Terrier's tenacity and spirit. It is one book that many fans buy after borrowing it from me! A cute story for those folks both young and old, who adore Jack Russell Terriers.
