PreS-Two stories about an ever-smiling, rotund pink pig with nasty habits. In Dudley Helps Out!, he does anything but. He knocks over furniture by roller-skating while dusting and cleans his room by cramming all of his toys under the bed. In Birthday Party, when asked if he is going to share his cake, he responds with a loud "NO!" Lifting the flap shows Dudley serving his three guests minuscule slices while hoarding the rest for himself. An illogical progression of party events ends with the words "Happy Birthday, Dudley!" and the final flap reveals his three friends (a pig, a rabbit, and a duck) blowing party horns and saying "Surprise!" Although the bright, childlike illustrations utilize bold, eye-catching colors and are developmentally appropriate for the intended age group, there isn't much else to like about these books. Jeannette Rowe's delightful and appealing Whose Nose?, Whose Ears?, and Whose Feet? (all Little, Brown, 1999) are far more successful lift-the-flap books.-Lisa Falk, Los Angeles Public Library

DUDLEY IS SO NAUGHTY BUT NICE!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dudley's Birthday Party (Hardcover)
Dudley's Birthday Party sees a cute but naughty little toddler pig acting in a way that is so familiar to anyone ever having been to a child's birthay party. But thank goodness he gets his come-upence in the end! A thoroughly enjoyable romp that kept us laughing to the end!! What a cute character Dudley is!!

Disappointing,

This review is from: Dudley's Birthday Party (Hardcover)
I was looking forward to this book because my 3-year-old daughter is such a fan of David Wojtowycz's "Rumble in the Jungle" and "Commotion in the Ocean." Here the illustrations and flaps are good, but the Dudley character is not very likable. He greets his friends at the door with "Where are my presents?" and eats almost all the cake by himself. I guess I could use this as an example of how not to behave, but I'd rather read to her about polite, good-mannered characters.
