An attorney investigates her boyfriend's murder in Kahn's latest thriller.

From Booklist

St. Louis attorney Rachel Gold is falling in love with Rabbi David Marcus. When a member of Marcus' synagogue, Bruce Rosenthal, cancels his appointment with Rachel and then turns up murdered, both Rachel and David assume the aborted appointment is somehow connected to the crime. Then Marcus is also murdered in what seems to be the work of an anti-Semitic hate group. Rachel, determined to solve both murders, discovers that Rosenthal was negotiating the merger of a small pharmaceutical firm with a larger conglomerate. The trail leads from there through the jungle of corporate law to the pharmaceutical firm's former owner, current Missouri senator and presidential hopeful Douglas Armstrong. The plotting is intricate, the dialogue witty, and Rachel's supporting cast, which includes a transsexual secretary named Jacki (formerly a steelworker named Jack), is memorable. Fine reading. More About the Author

Michael Kahn is a trial lawyer by day and an author at night. He wrote his first novel, GRAVE DESIGNS, on a challenge from his wife Margi, who got tired of listening to the same answer whenever she asked him about a book he was reading. "Not bad," he would say, "but I could write a better book than that." "Then write one," she finally said, "or please shut up." So he shut up, and then he wrote one.

Kahn is the award-winning author of: seven Rachel Gold novels; an eighth novel, THE MOURNING SEXTON, under the pen name Michael Baron; and several short stories.

In addition to his day job as a lawyer, he is an adjunct professor of law at Washington University in St. Louis, where he teaches a class on censorship and free expression. Married to his high school sweetheart, he is the father of five and the grandfather of, so far, three.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book is great; movie could be even better, June 5, 2000
This review is from: Due Diligence (Rachel Gold Mystery) (Paperback)
Upon reflection, Due Dilligence may be the best Rachel Gold story yet -- certainly it's the one with the most potential as a movie. In fact, it's a natural. Graphically, the opening scene is scary in reading and would be even moreso visually. The story is clever, intricately woven, with enough false leads to keep everyone guessing, and ends with a satisfying confrontation between Rachel and a surprising prime villain preceded by a life-and-death chase through the underground tunnels of old St. Louis -- again, something that would work even better darkly seen in a movie than a book. But the book works, oh, does it work. There is a sweet romance with a tragic ending for our heroine and, for a bit of lightness, a couple of memorable softball moments. The vallainy hinges on someone actually trying to do some good at its start, another ends-justify-the-means moral issue. And Rachel's closing confrontational comment: "You've destroyed enough universes for a lifetime" is the most satisfying resolution, morally and structurally. I can't wait for the movie, Mr. Kahn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great female character in book written by a male; FUNNY, December 6, 1995
By A Customer
Real life lawyer Kahn does a good job with his female lawyer character, Rachel Gold. Her raunchy friend, Benny, keeps Ms. Gold from taking herself too seriously. For people who know St. Louis, the book is full of local references...you always know where Rachel is about town. I had several good laughs in this book, in my opinion, the best of Kahn's Rachel Gold books.
