For me the mark of a great book is one that

A) I have a hard time putting down

and

B) I am sad when its over because I was so invested in it and want it to go on forever.

This book is exactly that and more.

I was completely wrapped up in "Duel for the Crown" from the opening page until the end. You will be transported back in time and you are going to love every minute of it. The writers honestly make you feel like you are there with how they tell the story, and with the detailed research they have done.

I thought I remembered the rivalry between Alydar and Affirmed, but there was so much I did not know. Wow- this is a true "Hollywood" story.

You don't have to be a "horse person" to enjoy this book, you just have to love a great story, and that is exactly what this is.

Anyone who pays attention to throughbred racing or just the Triple Crown are well aware of the famous battle of two great horses, Alydar and Affirned. Even starting this book knowing the outcome, I was riveted by the history between these two stars and their human connections. The authors filled in the background to one of the most exciting rivalry's in horse racing that came to a final head at Belmont Park. This book is a must read for racing fans but also anyone who likes to read about a well fought battle!

I can’t say enough good things about this new work. Having been a long-time fan of horse racing history, I thought I knew quite a bit about the rivalry between Affirmed and Alydar. After reading this inside story though, I found I truly knew very little. I especially enjoyed the back stories, not only of the horses and their ancestors, but also of the people who bred and owned them. I have been fortunate to visit not only Calumet but also the Horse Museum at the Kentucky Horse Park, home now to all Calumet’s trophies from years gone by. This story brings their significance even more to life. If you are looking for a good summer read, by all means make it Duel For the Crown. A word of warning though....be sure you have adequate reading time because from the first page to the last, you will not want to put this book down until you have finished every word. Kudos to Linda Carroll and David Rosner not only for their in depth research of historical facts, but for bringing the horses and those that owned and loved them nearly 40 years ago back to life in 2014.

I am not usually a fan of books about horses or horse racing, though I loved all those horse racing movies that I saw when I was young. However, this well-researched and captivating book, “Duel for the Crown: Affirmed, Alydar, and Racing's Greatest Rivalry” by Linda Carroll and David Rosner, is the exception. It tells the riveting story of the great duel between Affirmed, who in 1978 was the last horse to win the Triple Crown, and his archrival Alydar. While the book is about this extraordinary duel, between these two magnificent horses, as they battle their way, in their ever-narrowing margins of victory, from the Kentucky Derby, to the Preakness Stakes, and finally the nose-to-nose finish at the Belmont Stakes, it is much more. With the use of many wonderful and colorful stories of the famous stables, owners, trainers and jockeys, Carroll and Rosen make these races come alive as they help us navigate through the labyrinth of the horse racing world and the duel between the upstart owners of Affirmed, Harbor View Farms, and scions of blue grass country, the owners of Alydar, Calumet Farms. I think I loved this book because it reminded me, so much, of all those wonderful horse racing movies and I cannot wait to see this book as a movie.

This great book was written especially for those of us who love the sport ( NOT the business) of thoroughbred racing. I say "especially" because those of you who were not even born when this great rivalry occurred will also enjoy it. This is the type of book that, when you start to read it, you just can't put it down. The detail about the lives of all the people, AKA "connections", involved in each camp is simply fantastic. Points are brought out in this book that even those of us that worship this sport never knew about. If you love horses, fast horses, determined horses, and spine-tingling stretch runs, get this book fast !!

I am a "horse person". Having owned an off-the-track thoroughbred this book drew me in right from the very first page. I admit that I knew very little (read nothing) about horse racing when I started reading, but I did know that my thoroughbred had a heart of gold and a special mindset that made our relationship special. I was interested in reading about other thoroughbred racehorses, their careers and what made them so great. I was especially interested in reading about two such famous thoroughbreds and about the Triple Crown.

The story of the two kings of the racing world, Alydar and Affirmed, is a fascinating read. This book takes you into the world of thoroughbred racing, putting the racing world into the context of the time when these two horses were bred, raised, trained and raced. The authors have interwoven story of the two horses, their breeders and trainers and jockeys, with a glimpse into the history of breeding, training and racing thoroughbreds. But the authors don't leave it there. Although the subject of the book is ultimately the rivalry between the two horses, there is a look into the nation at the time and a look into the world of thoroughbreds born to race.

This book is not just for horse people. My DH, who is the person least interested in horses and racing of anyone I know, has been captivated by the history, the locations and the people. The skillfully written histories, the descriptions of the places and people, the intimate view of how decisions were made, how the horses were handled, the differences in training.... all captured DH's interest.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in history!
