5.0 out of 5 stars La Düsseldorf's First Album--Krautrock's Forgotten Classic, October 19, 2006

This review is from: La Duesseldorf (Audio CD)
This is the long-lost cousin to Autobahn--from a parallel universe. Sharing a sonic palette and sensibility with Kraftwerk's classic, this debut is a shining gem of a record--a perfect paradox of indulgence and musical economy. Klaus Dinger's highly original vision builds on both, snarly parody and unabashed love of glitter and beauty. It combines the darkness of the Doors and Velvets with the light of the Beach Boys and sappiness of German schlagers. Consider Dinger a Krautrock prophet, of sorts. His snarling vocals on NEU!75 predated the Sex Pistols by over a year and his reciting of the names of corporations on the title track predated Kraftwerk's "Computer World" by five. But never mind who came first. While the hockey game sounds on "Düsseldorf" may evoke Pink Floyd's similar use of football match sounds on Meddle, the overall tone and voice of this record are absolutely original. La Düsseldorf's debut is a miracle of timeless, shimmering beauty, made up of equal parts melancholia and rock'n'roll drive. Put on the record and be transported to a timeless vision of Utopia--made in 70s Germany.
