Product Description

Review

"IPO Records continues to hold itself out as the premier platform for real players that want to make accessible, non-populist music where they really get the chance to smoke. Kellaway leads the crew on this double live set recorded over four nights, where the gang is modeled on the combos of Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson, and the set card is heavy on period workouts from Miles Davis, Ellington, and others, giving this a MJQ feel more often than not, except it swings harder than they often did. Everyone on deck here is a pro and Kellaway raises all their games. Simply supreme, sublime adult jazz for sophisticated tastes and those who wish they had some. Hot stuff throughout that doesn't disappoint at all." -- Midwest Record Recap [IPO 1014]

It takes a superb pairing of musicians and the right choice of material to produce a jazz duo album that the discriminating listener will find not only appealing, but intriguing. That's exactly what you have in these tracks, recorded live in March/April 2005 (but not released until early 2009). This is more than a mere rendering of four old standards and six original tunes. The arrangements - if one can use that term when discussing the largely improvised performances of two players - give the artists a chance to shine individually and together. They display many faces, sometimes within the same tune.
As always, Eddie Daniels shows how the clarinet can be sweet and articulate in any part of its range. Roger Kellaway knows how to lay out a strong but subtle background, and when to charge into the lead. Both artists leave no doubt that their seemingly telepathic interplay comes from many years of collaboration.
A few highlights: The 11-minute version of "I Want To Be Happy" starts out free-form and evolves into a nice medium swing, including a touch of humor as the musicians throw a three-note motif back and forth at various points in the piece. "New Orleans," "Blue Waltz," and "Love of My Life" are shear beauty. "We'll Always Be Together," one of Eddie's originals, was previously recorded on his "Beautiful Love" album, but he breathes new life into it to make us want to hear it again.
Paquito D'Rivera, another outstanding clarinetist, provided some nice liner notes, although you may need to squint a bit to read the small print. The only thing I don't like about the package is the cover art, which consists of a portrait of a sitting man with his face smudged out. But that doesn't stop me from enjoying these tracks over and over.

Eddie is the absolute greatest on the clarinet, and Kellaway makes a true musical soulmate for this phenomenal clarinetst! It's as though the two were operating out of the same brainspace...a great rationale for the title!

Not taking anything away from eddie's recordings over the last decade but I believe eddie is performing at a quality only equaled by the majority of his GRP recordings. His sound has been captured with that incredible roundness and liquidity that we all know is present in his performance but not always captured by some recording techniques. As for the creativity that is shared between Eddie and Roger Kellaway, it is second to none. It reminds me of his 'To Bird with Love" album, which also had Roger Kellaway present. They are a formidible duo.

The interplay between Eddie and Roger is unbelievable. Improvisation and sensitivity between the two in a live performance at the Jazz Bakery just could not be better. As a clarinetist myself, I would have to consider this one of my all time favorite recordings.
