5.0 out of 5 stars Two superb romances, June 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Duets 7 (Annie, Get Your Groom/Taming Luke) (Harlequin Duets) (Paperback)
"Annie, Get Your Groom" by Kristin Gabriel. Thugs invade Annie Bonacci's New Jersey apartment seeking a journal that the investigative reporter stole from their boss. Annie barely escapes by flying to Denver in hope of hiding at the ranch of her alleged fiancé. She hires private investigator Cole Rafferty to find the missing groom. Bored with his recent caseload and seeing something deeper in Annie's tale, Cole accepts her case without a fee. As they search for a missing fiancé and avoid vicious criminals, the duo falls in love, but neither feel prepared for a lifetime of happiness together. Kristin Gabriel hooks fans of romantic suspense with an entertaining tale starring two wonderful protagonists and a host of interfering secondary players.

"Taming Luke" by Jennifer Drew. CEO Rupert Cox assigns Jane Grant with the impossible task of civilizing his grandson, who lived most of his life in Africa. Not wanting the assignment, Rupert makes an offer Jane cannot refuse. If she fails to accept the job or to civilize her charge, she is simply fired. As Jane meets "Tarzan", they fall in love. However, neither one can afford the complication. She needs her job and not a romance with the boss' only living relative. He only came stateside to meet his mother's father and cannot wait to return to his home. Jennifer Drew shows her abilities as she provides readers with an exhilarating romantic romp starring a hunk to die for and his intrepid Jane.

As expected by readers, the latest Duet contains two fabulous romances for the price of one book. Both writers hit back to back home runs as fans will enjoy both novels.

4.0 out of 5 stars two for the price of one, July 30, 2005

Reviewing a Harlequin Duets brings on the same challenges as reviewing an anthology - different stories by different authors in the same book. In this case "Annie Get Your Groom" by Kristin Gabriel and "Taming Luke" by Jennifer Drew. Both are lightweight comedic romps, but both are very different stories.

In "Annie Get Your Groom" Annie Bonacci is on the run from her fiance (make that fiance number one) and his goons when she decides to hide out in Colorado with fiance number two. Problem is, she can't locate fiance number two, so she turns to private investigator Cole Rafferty for help. Cole has problems of his own, so he strikes a bargain with Annie. If she pretends to be his fiancee from hell, he'll take her case for free. With three fiancees to keep track of, things were bound to get complicated for Annie and Cole!

Kristin Gabriel does a great job of moving the main plot along while weaving in several subplots to keep the reader interested. I really enjoyed "Annie Get Your Groom" and would rate it 5 stars.

"Taming Luke" is about Luke Stanton, the boss's grandson, who has spent most of his life living in Africa. Now he has come to the United States to meet his grandfather and learn a little bit about his grandfather's company. Jane Grant has been given 30 days to transform Luke from a jungle boy into an acceptable executive or be fired!

"Taming Luke" was a pretty straighforward story, and I didn't enjoy it quite as much. Luke might have acted like a He-man jungle boy, but it was obvious from the get-go that it was all an act. After all, how much taming would an engineer educated in England really need? I couldn't really warm up to the story, and I would have to rate it 3 stars.
