Biography

Beginning his career as an outlaw to the Nashville establishment, Johnny Cash has come to define country music over the last 40 years. At first, his unique mix of hillbilly music with gospel and blues made him a perfect fit at Sam Phillips' Sun records, where he recorded such classics as "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk The Line." From there, Johnny signed with ... Read more in Amazon's Johnny Cash Store

Editorial Reviews

Country music's First Couple, Johnny Cash and June Carter began making beautiful music together in 1961, when she began touring with "The Man in Black." Born into one of America's great musical families in the 1920s, the Carter Family (comprising June's mother, the influential guitarist Maybelle, and her aunt and uncle, Sarah and A.P.) helped create the musical template still at work in bluegrass, "traditional" country, and some forms of folk. June made a name for herself by co-writing the huge hit 'Ring of Fire'. A Johnny Cash signature song, it topped Billboard's Country chart for seven weeks in 1963, cracking the Pop Top Twenty, as well. Contains the classics 'Jackson', and 'It Ain't Me, Babe'. Columbia. 2006.

"Duets" is an enjoyable compilation of the songs Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash sang together. As would be expected from a duets disc, the romance factor is high. There is a noticeable absence of songs about murder, incarceration or redemption. June brings out the lighter side of the Man in Black. If you've always wanted to get your lady friend interested in Johnny Cash, here's the disc to play. At times, the treatment is a bit corny. The 1970's symphony orchestra and background vocals negatively date some of the songs. The stripped down arrangements make for the most powerful interpretations. Despite the cheesy treatment of some tunes, it's still Johnny and June. They had beautiful voices and they sang good songs. It would be difficult to hear this compilation and not feel good. The "Walk the Line" film made the world more aware of the great relationship between June and the Man in Black. While "Carryin' On With Johnny Cash & June Carter" features additional June and Johnny tunes, "Duets" is the ultimate musical celebration of their love.

In response to comments posted by the reviewer above "Delite Rancher":

Not sure what you've been examining during your 'closer inspection' but I'd suggest that you might want to closely inspect the track listings for these discs again. I see a great deal of overlapping.

Still a great album, certainly worthy of 5 stars, but I stand behind what I wrote earlier. Get one -or the other- but ya don't need both. Unless you're a completist. Period. End of discussion. 'Nuff said.

ORIGINAL REVIEW from 2006.04.19:
This appears to be a nicely done re-packaging of the "16 BIGGEST HITS" disc. In fact, when I ripped this disc to my 'puter it came up as....uhhuhhh, you guessed it! '16 Biggest Hits".

Johnny Cash (February 26, 1932--September 12, 2003) and June Carter Cash (June 23, 1929--May 15, 2003) sang beautiful duets together; this CD spotlights their terrific music and I highly recommend this for any of their fans. The quality of the sound is excellent and you can choose to either purchase the CD or download just the tunes you want as MP3 files. Of course, the MP3 files come in handy just in case you want the album so badly that you don't want to wait for the CD to come in the mail--you can download them all right here without waiting!

I'm really impressed with these wonderful songs; every track's a winner. "It Ain't Me, Babe" has Johnny and June singing with a great deal of energy and I like how they use the harmonica in the musical arrangement! "Jackson" shines bright and "Long-Legged Guitar Pickin' Man" couldn't have been done any better. "Oh, What A Good Thing We Had" is most poignant and listen for them to do a great job on "Darlin' Companion." "Darlin' Companion" comes from a live performance and you can tell they had an excellent rapport with their audience. "If I Were a Carpenter" gets the royal treatment and other gems include "Cause I Love You" with Johnny and June harmonizing faultlessly; "The Loving Gift;" the stunning "Help Me Make It Through The Night;" "The Pine Tree" which also boasts a fine arrangement; "No Need To Worry" with all that splendid energy; "Old Time Feeling" with a lush musical arrangement; "One Way Rider" with them never letting go of a superfluous note; "Brand New Dance" which has them masterfully handling complex tempo and key changes; "Far Side Banks Of Jordan" that sounds so good every time I listen to it and the album's closing number, "It Takes One To Know Me." What a great way to end this set of songs!

This cd is an exact reissue of the Johnny Cash and June Carter 16 Biggest Hits cd. One only has to compare the track listing on the Import version of this cd listed on Amazon to the 16 Biggest hits cd to see what a huge ripoff this new package is. The sound quality is likely not any better than previous issues of all of these songs, in fact it theoretically could be louder and more distorted given the way music on cd is mastered these days, but it could be that they used the old 16 Biggest Hits master and didn't even re-master the recordings. Save your money, buy the cheaper 16 Biggest Hits cd, and avoid pieces of junk like this that are put out because record companies cannot think of new ways to market recordings without rehasing the exact same thing over and over again. This cd gets one star because there is nothing special about it.
