Julian Barnes Under Another Name: The Duffy Omnibus,
By
This review is from: Duffy Omnibus (Paperback)
The author of the recently released "Nothing to be Afraid Of," Julian Barnes, published, in the 80's, four books about a bi-sexual, ex-cop turned security consultant, Nick Duffy. The novels are out of print, and I found my "Duffy Omnibus" (a penguin book) through an independent bookseller associated with Amazon. "Duffy," "Fiddle City," "Putting the Boot In," and "Going to the Dogs," can also be found separately.
Nick Duffy's world is SOHO of 30 years ago; a world without computers and cellphones, where an ear stud was more than a fashion statement. This security consultant, burgled twice, lives by his wits. The books were considered risqué for the time; all are great fun, diversions to pass the time away. Too bad Barnes, writing here as Dan Kavanaugh, stopped creating the Duffy Books. And speaking of writing, Barnes'/Kavanaugh's prose is sparkling -- a factor of ten above most detective fiction. The only drawback to the books is that they are too short.
