conibear traps work well,
By
This review is from: Duke Body Trap (Misc.)
This is a standard issue Conibear style trap. This means a few things - most importantly that it is a kill trap. This is not a live trap. You must understand this before buying it and wondering why you have dead animals stuck in it.
You do not need the tool suggested by amazon. You do need two working braincells to know where to put your feet. You need to be strong enough to put 100lbs of force on the springs. If you're not strong, buy the set tool. If you weigh more than 100lbs and you're of average build, you don't need the tool but it helps. It really helps when you're trying not to get mixed up too much with the body in the trap, and it really helps when you have three or more out there and your arms get tired. Pros - conibear traps fit just about anywhere which is important if you want to catch something specific and have limited space. They blend in and don't alert animals, or they can be baited to attract animals. The trigger does not care if you bend the whiskers. Unlike other traps, it does not need to have the trigger maintain it's shape. Unlike other traps it does not require lubricant (usually bees wax). This particular trap has two springs, which means each spring requires half the force to set it and the trap closes evenly. Cons - This particular trap is not stainless steel. It will rust. This particular trap only has three "teeth", which only gives you three settings of sensitivity for the trigger. In reality this is a minor gripe because the trigger is just as long as other triggers. The whiskers on the trigger are not user serviceable, so the trap has a limited life. Too many bends on the whiskers or the trap shutting on them (a common problem with the conibears) will break them off.

Did the job,

The trap worked exactly as it should. Beat my expectations. Setup was really easy. Was the perfect solution for a groundhog that would not respect the fence around my vegetables and made a mockery of the have a heart. Worked best when placed directly in front of the hole. I wouldn't use it where a pet could get to it, though -- this thing means business. It was plenty big to handle a very large groundhog.
Shipping was fast -- fast enough to save the tomatoes. It comes covered in oil, and will rust fairly quickly if left out unprotected. A dirty device for a dirty job -- no complaints. You'll need to give some thought to how to dispose of the results. It didn't make a mess, but still, you've got to do *something* with what you catch.

sturdy product,

I will admit that this was an impulse purchase for me, I've never trapped an animal in my life...that being said, I have used this on sticks and even a shoe and it works nicely on those. It seems to be sturdy and well made, but one word of caution, it takes a fair amount of strength to set it by hand. Anyone who isn't very strong may want to consider buying a setting tool as well.
