Gr. 7-10. The lively sounds of a jazz pianist and the vibrant colors of an innovative artist come alive in these two additions to the Giants of Art and Culture series. Beginning chapters focus on the subject's childhood and youth, looking at early influences and family life. Subsequent sections chart career twists and turns that eventually brought each artist attention reserved only for the very best. Both volumes seem solidly grounded in the times in which their subjects lived, including historical references from wars to racial prejudice. Numerous historical photographs add interest, and a time line, a comprehensive bibliography, a glossary, and a list of works are appended. Good starting points for biography assignments.
