Best Kept Secret,
By Rick (Essex, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ellington Piano Solos (Audio CD)
This CD is one of the best kept secrets in the jazz world. It would be an understatement to call the playing inspired. It is marvelous collaboration between Sir Roland Hanna and bassest Geroge Mraz. The recording showcases the long experience Sir Roland has had in music field. He makes the songs sound deceptively simple because his playing is so beautiful and complex. He moves from note to note with a smooth, easy grace which is unique to his style. George Mraz on bass fills out each of the songs giving them depth and fullness. This is truly one of the great jazz reordings of all time by two of the masters.

I have been won over by Sir Roland. At first I was skeptical of his interpretations especially icons like "Reflections in D" and "Come Sunday", now I'm totally in love with his strokes. This album will grow on you.

I LOVE this album. I think it is one of the best jazz albums ever. I would play this for anyone who argues the legitimacy of jazz vs. classical music. It's not flashy, it's not jaw-dropping, but it's as beautiful as can be. Simplicity of piano and bass with the amazing writing of Ellington and the masterful touch of Sir Hanna and Mraz.
