Biography

“I revere the Duke, but I didn’t want to make a reverent album”, Joe Jackson says of The Duke, his new tribute to jazz legend Duke Ellington.

The Duke is indeed an unconventional salute to Ellington, demonstrating the timeless brilliance of his compositions while showcasing Jackson’s skills as arranger, instrumentalist and singer. Though it’s his second ... Read more in Amazon's Joe Jackson Store

So, three stars, as it's better than average, but just slightly.

Joe Jackson brings some really fresh arrangements to these classic songs giving them a thoroughly contemporary sound and they ROCK!

Yet the possibility of re-imagining the music of such a diverse yet distinctive composer must have been beyond appealing.

When anyone is interpreting the music of one of (if not the greatest) of all American composers,it presents a significant challange. Ellington himself didn't write for his entire orchestrsa all the time. He wrote for individual members. His writing, popular or less so always offered his players the same challange he expected from himself. Over the years Joe Jackson's love of jazz has continued to expand out into his music in a number of different and usually very exciting ways. Considering the trendiness of albums of standards,it wouldn't seem that would be at all Jackson's cup of tea. Yet the possibility of re-imagining the music of such a diverse yet distinctive composer must have been beyond appealing. Bringing together some of jazz's world class talents from singer Sussan Deyim,Regina Carter,Christian McBride and pairing them with people from the rock and soul world such as Sharon Jones,Steve Vai,Questlove and Iggy Pop...well you knew something was going to happen

Even though the impressive guests could easily have overwelmed the music with their own personalities, the best thing about this album is how they all blend together into a cohesive band. Because the do so well working off their strengths and weaknesses, everyone involved give the effect of making the originals sound even better. Even my own father admitted this after listening to the album. The beautifully percussive take on "Caravan" and the heavily African style "Isfahan" start everything out very well and both are very much highlites.

I read the reviews before buying this record and, for the people who had negative things to say, I just have to wonder what the heck they were expecting. This is Joe Jackson paying tribute to an artist he loves. Once I started listening, I couldn't stop. I must have played the whole thing three times through (and I NEVER do that). While I think each rendition is textured and interesting (well worth numerous listens), what comes across most powerfully to me as I listen is this - it sure seems like Joe Jackson was having fun. You can feel it as you listen. And his fun is not only palpable but infectious. If you like Duke Ellington's music, aren't such a purist as to be offended by adventurous interpretations, and enjoy great musicianship, this album is a genuine treat. Enjoy!

Ellington often reinterpreted his own songs so I found these takes on his songs make a refreshing and enjoyable CD. I like all kinds of music and while it did take a couple listens I have now put this into my car CD player for regular rotation. I like an artist that does not stick to a single formula and is willing to take chances. Joe Jackson goes his own way and I willingly follow.

Based on Jackson's phenomenal rendition of Ellington's Mood Indigo on SUMMER IN THE CITY, I had high expectations of this album. But this album was far from anything I was expecting. It took me a few listens to acclimate myself to these bold interpretations of the Duke's music. But this album has true staying power. It gets better with every listen.

Joe Jackson continues to make bold forays into exotic musical terrain, really pushing the boundaries with this one. Maybe not for everyone, especially if you are looking for more of the same of 80's New-Wave-era Joe Jackson. But make no mistake, this is a keeper. Also, sonically it's an amazing recording.

I just couldn't stop listening. You will hear Duke Ellington like you never thought possible. Don't expect a standard jazz album and don't expect it to be like other Joe Jackson music. This is a totally fresh, creative, and varied interpretation of Duke Ellington melodies. Buy it if you want to hear something different and well done, maybe not if you want something less surprising.

I have listened to Joe Jackson for many years, and this album is definitely one of his finest. "The Duke" is simply fun to listen to, and Joe's twist on many of Ellington's classics makes the music shine. An excellent buy!

Joe Jackson's new set "The Duke" is superb! I'm stone cold knocked out by this set. Jackson does not do a cookie cutter version of Ellington, which may throw Ellington fans a bit. What he does do is breathe life and fill each track with great energy. The medley "I'm Beginning to See the Light/Take the 'A' Train/Cotton Tail" smokes with Regina Carter's violin given free reign in an awe-inspiring performance. Sharon Jones' vocals blaze on the medley "I Ain't Got Nothin' But the Blues/Do Nothin' 'Til You Hear from Me," "Ain't got a dream that is workin'; I ain't got nothing but the blues." Iggy Pop joins Jackson on vocals on the wild "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" with Christian McBride's bass thumping into the stratosphere and one of the most original percussion arrangements I've heard. While these three track are my very favorites, "Rockin' In Rhythm," "The Mooche/Black & Tan Fantasy" & "Caravan" also rivet my attention. This set is jamming my changer and totally jazzes my ear. Enjoy!
