Heroes Come and Go, But a King Reigns Forever

Did the Alien bastards not learn their lesson the first time? Duke has been on hiatus for some time now, kicking back and franchising himself on the fame he gained from saving Earth from the first invasion. The Aliens have returned to Earth yet again, messing up Duke's sweet routine of dirty leisure habits. The Alien invaders are stealing Earth's women, especially the hot ones! And they drank Duke's beer. This-Won't-Stand. As Duke battles his way through waves of aliens, the once beautiful gambling haven and Duke Nukem franchise chains are crumbling before his eyes. Time to bring the pain

Duke Nukem is one of the biggest and most recognizable brands in gaming history. Irreverent, UN-PC, and uber-Macho, Duke Nukem is the perfect antidote to the overdose of today's clichéd gaming archetypes. The game's cocktail of alien invasion, busty babes, bawdy comedy and big guns never gets old. The highly anticipated Duke Nukem Forever is a celebration of what video games are really about: an out loud good time. The game is huge, with hours and hours of over-the-top single player action, and a range of bodacious multiplayer modes like Duke Match, Capture the Babe and Hail to the king, players can rest assured knowing that the fun will last.

I had preordered this, and while I waited for it to arrive, its reviews, both as a game, and the extras for the Balls of Steel edition, made me sort of nervous. Had I made a misstep?

But then it arrived, and I was reminded that trust in Duke is never misplaced! I don't really see the validity of the complaints leveled against this game, and can only imagine they were made by people unfamiliar with Duke Nukem as a whole, or who let themselves get Phantom Menace Syndrome over it. The game does sometimes lag for a split second, but it's never gotten in the way of my enjoyment. The graphics are fine enough for me, the load times are like 30-35 seconds at the worst, the puzzles are interesting, and if you play well, you won't be seeing too much of them, the weapons are interesting, and I like the levels. The game's flaws don't hamper it being super-fun. I was glad to see an FPS that's not a thinly veiled commercial for the Army. When's the last time you played one of those?

The Balls of Steel extra goodies are also wonderful! I don't understand how anyone could dislike them. There were some that I didn't care much about, like the sticker and papercraft, but they were still well done. The card deck, while small, is still really cool, as are the chips and dice. The bust... what did you expect, a foot and a half tall statue of Duke Nukem? It's not incredibly big, but it's well made, well detailed, and better than most game extras like this I've collected. The comic is cool, the certificate's nice, and the postcards are pretty spiffy. The art book is an absolute treasure, and its craftsmanship is remarkable.

For the most part, this game can be somewhat wordy at times. However, this game is created by people who wanted to make games for themselves, not necessarily for the average video game consumers in the twenty-first century. Duke's conversations are to satisfy the players who played video games in the Clinton era. We talked a lot and we dealt with many unclear pixels back in the day. Some of the video game players' eyes were f-ed up because of it. Let's suppose that it is the sacrifice that we have made to play this game.

Some people say that the graphics are not as clear, yet it is ten times better than counter-strike's pictures for the big bosses and AI. I can see why ten years of R&D was put into this. And to purchase the Balls of Steel Edition is worth it in my opinion. Thank you very much.

this game is true to its Duke Nukem roots. If you loved the comic relief of the originals then you will enjoy this one. I was slightly disappointed in the game because after so many years i had hoped the game would have evolved to the now grown up Duke fans but it didnt. after some consideration i realized this is Duke and to have changed him drastically would have been an epic fail.

I pre-ordered the special editiom and was really happy with it. Great art book, cool little statue, awesome comic and more. The game itself i enjoyed. Not the sharpest graphics or load times by modern standards but all in all a fun game. Excellent single player game that is pretty long. Give it a shot. Its something different from same old same old war games.

I'm so out of step with the mainstream of human thought in most things. When it comes to rating video game experiences I am profoundly out of step with the vast gaming masses. Duke Nukem Forever is the MOST fun I have had playing a video game yet. Duke Nukem is just a Dead Common Delightfully Disgusting Male Chauvinist PIG on Steroids Literally and darn proud to be so. Duke Nukem is all attitude and full of male testosterone pulsing DIVA-Tude! Duke Nukem is the ultimate in unapologetic self absorbed fun. The fun of Duke Nukem Forever is the very fact that Duke Nukem has a Political Correctness Quotient less than Zero. Duke Nukem's humane sensitivity would be measured in 24 digit negative numbers which is what makes Duke Nukem fun. Duke Nukem is about as in your face as possible. Duke Nukem is SOOO over the top he makes the fictional Sunset Boulevard Diva Norma Desmond look a fumbling novice at self absorption. The controls are imprecise and jumpy. The shooter control layout is all wrong. Example the trigger is not assigned to the L2\R2 buttons as today's gamer expects.

AS for game play the Duke Nukem controls on PS3 are difficult to manage. The weapons are surprisingly weak in that they do little damage for all their noise and bluster. The weapons selection is lame since you are limited to carrying just two weapons in active inventory. The developers went too far in trying to keep the look and feel of the old Duke Nukem. Time marches on Duke Nukem developers forgot that time marches on and the game could have been lovingly updated without its game play being trapped in a 1990's time capsule. All that said the graphics are by far not the best I have ever seen but the graphics deliver an experience that is very playable on the PS3 system and my 55 inch TV screen.
