4.0 out of 5 stars One of three fun Duke3D Expansions I own..., June 1, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Duke Nukem 3D Duke It Out In D.C. add-on (CD-ROM)
This is an expansion for Duke Nukem 3D. Duke Nukem 3D was one of the best games of its time. It was not suitable for children... it's mainly targeted towards late-teens/early-twenties types, but as a now-40-something guy, I still get a kick out of Duke.

This one is set in Washington DC... starting off using the White House as your first "arena." I can't say it's totally accurate, but it's a lot of fun. Not really any different than any other Duke3D map set, but it was worth it. It does seem like the price, on here, may be a bit on the high side, though! I think I paid ~ $20, new, back in the day.

For those who are trying to get Duke3D to run on a modern system... Google is your friend. I recommend, in particular, a search for the term "Jonof" along with "Duke" and "Nukem." You'll find what you need to run this, better than in DOS, on a modern system.

Alternatively, you can use DOSBox... it works fine in there as well.

I was just about to go play that... in preparation for the release of the new Duke game in just a couple of weeks... and thought I'd take a quick look on here.

It may not be "photorealistic modern graphics" but so what? It's a lot of fun... with a really twisted sense of humor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Having Fun in D.C., January 14, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Duke Nukem 3D Duke It Out In D.C. add-on (CD-ROM)
This was one of those games that I saw for years, but never had a chance to see or play until recently.

I caught wind of some videos of Duke it Out in D.C. back in late 2008, early 2009. I liked what I saw, so I started looking for a copy. Little did I realize it would have been really difficult to find, as hard copies are nearly impossible to locate. I finally found some copies on here in mid-to-late 2009, but I didn't have enough money at the time, so I found a link on the internet, and found a working copy.

The only way you can get Duke it Out in D.C. (or Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach) to work is a program called eduke23. One you have it working (there's instructions all over the internet on how to get it to work in eduke23), you have an interesting add-on.

The first level puts you right in front of the White House. From there, you show up at the Lincoln Memorial, an FBI Building, the Smithsonian Museum (the largest level in the game. more on that later.), the Capitol Building, the D.C. Subway Metro (where you can find the secret Warehouse level), the D.C. Sewers, a Submarine Shipyard, and the game concludes at NORAD Control. The variety of levels kept me going until the end.

As for gameplay, however, it's nothing new. Gun down aliens, check. Find keys, weapons, and items, check. Despite this, it's still fun to shrink a pig and stomp on him.

Despite the 5-star fun rating, I gave this game a 4-star overall rating. Even though this game is fun, there is one small problem, and I'm not the only one that thinks this. The level designs are somewhat confusing, and while people who have played through it a bunch of times will be able to go through it without too much difficulty, new players will be very confused. The Smithsonian Museum, in particular, can leave players lost for a while. When I first played through the museum level, it took me almost 40 minutes to complete.

Despite the level design, Duke it Out in D.C. is a fun little diversion in the Duke Nukem universe. The ending is sure to give you a chuckle, and blasting through D.C. is...well, a blast. My suggestion, buy this game if you have the cash, but download it if you can't.

Oh, one more thing. Sunstorm Interactive didn't actually create this game, they only produced it. It was created buy some guy working in a video game store, and made it through a contest in 8 weeks. Making something now in 8 weeks isn't too difficult, but back in the mid/late 90s was a feat onto itself.

This expansion is one of the greatest Duke adventures created. You run through fully mapped versions of D.C., including, of course, the white house, in order to save the president's life. It doesn't get much better than this.

However, good luck getting it to run on anything other than your grandfather's PC. Even after extensive googling I wasn't able to figure out a way to install it on my 2005(!)/Windows XP laptop.
