We just want our name back,
By
This review is from: Dukes of Dixieland (Audio CD)
I am the daughter of the orginal trombone player and co-founder of the Dukes, Freddy Assunto. I have to tell you that we are now re claiming our name. John Shoup has mis represented the name for 25 + years and we have gotten it taken care of finally. After 25 years we have finally figured it out. Stay tuned to your news to find out the details. Still too fresh to let any cats out of the bag. Angel Assunto Soulas

Angela! Please e-mail me at tuba@nbc-2.com. I am 35 years old, and grew up worshiping your father and uncle. When I was 19, I drove to NO, and was appalled at what had happened to the Dukes. I know the true story about how John Shoup stole the name, and want to help. I am in the media in Ft. Myers, FL and have contacts at the Today show, as I have appeared on it twice. PLEASE CONTACT ME!

The Real Deal,
By James J. Luellen (Columbus, OH United States) - See all my reviews

Legalities aside, this CD does feature the original Dukes of Dixieland, not the pretenders. This is the Dukes from the early to mid - 1960's, and the CD is a great companion piece to the first two LPs the Dukes put out on Columbia. I'm from Columbus, OH, and remember, quite well, hearing Frank, Fred and Pap Jac at the old Grandview Inn. What great musical memories!

I don't know how John Shoup stole the name of the Dukes, but it's highway robbery. In no way is this band honoring the original Dukes. I had the pleasure of hearing them and meeting them in Chicago in the late l950's and collected all their work on Audiophile and, originally with Pete Fountain on clarinet. I have been duped into buying this second-rate journeyman band and believe that it's a crime. Buyers, beware and check the personnel on the recording before you buy. This band had also played in Melbourne, Florida and the response was very disappointing.
