Book Description

An American spy with a British birth, Adam Trent, the Duke of Cornwall, is consumed with gathering information to use against England’s navy. But, despite the intrigues of war, the mystery of the lovely young woman washed ashore near his Cornwall estate is one he cannot resist. With the ragged remains of a treasure map concealed in her chemise and no memory of who she is and how she got there, the dark beauty is an alluring puzzle he must solve.
Fighting her powerful desire for the man who has sheltered her, Jewel Bona struggles both to remember her past and imagine what her future might hold. But when a British officer claiming that he is her uncle threatens to expose her to terrifying danger, she turns to Adam for protection ... and passion.
Fleeing to America aboard Adam’s ship, the two cannot deny all that they feel in each other’s embrace. But the shadow of war and a scandalous connection to an infamous pirate loom like a powder keg over their dreams of love--a love each will risk everything to keep alive.

4 stars - "Ms. Jernigan plots an intricate tale of intrigue and patriotism, spiced with passion.  Her characters are interesting, her plot moves rapidly, her love scenes are steamy.  SENSUAL."  Evelyn Fetner - Romantic Times Magazine.

4 stars - "Well researched and interestingly written.  Charming and packed with adventure."  Ricky Mallory - Affaire de Coeur

5 stars - "Superb plotting and deft characterizations combine intrigue, adventure, and passion to make this a book to add to your must have list."  RG - Rendezvous

FIVE STARS! Wow! Nothing else really needs to be said. This story has mystery, suspense, action, and (of course) romance. I honestly do not see how the author managed to put all of that (and more) in one novel, yet she has! Both the hero and heroine are strong characters who complement each other. The more I learned about each, the more intrigued I became. I cannot recommend this title highly enough. *****   Detra Fitch Huntress Reviews

5.0 out of 5 stars I cannot recommend this one highly enough. June 12, 2014
Format:Paperback
It is the end of September, 1813. Adam Trent, Duke of St. Ives, had to return to England, and take over Briercliff when his grandfather died a year ago. His twin sister, Elizabeth, is still in New Orleans. Though Adam currently resides in Cornwall, England, he is still half American and believes that the United States should be allowed to govern themselves. This means he must be careful so as not to be labeled as a traitor by England.

While on the coast with his close friend, Jonathan Hird, Adam finds an unconscious lady who has been washed ashore. At Briercliff, Adam and his staff care for the young lady. It seems someone had her beaten with cat-o’-nine-tails before allowing the sea to claim her. But who would even think of doing such a thing? And why?

Once the lady wakes, she has no memory. Clues provide her name, Jewel; however, her last name remains a mystery to all. Flashbacks prove that her memory will return in time, but until then Jewel would remain at Briercliff. Meanwhile, Jewel, Adam, and Jonathan are amazed at the skills she possesses. The lady is an excellent swordsman and a certain knife never strays far from her thoughts. Why she feels the urgent need to locate the knife is unknown to her though.

The attraction between Jewel and Adam sizzles, threatening to flare into an inferno. But both of them have unfinished business to attend to first.

5.0 out of 5 stars very good August 17, 2014

This is a story that grabs your interest from the start and keeps it until the end. It begins with the Duke, Adam, out riding across his estate and finds the body of a young girl washed up on the beach. He takes her to his home and has a doctor tend to her and finds lash marks on her back. When she recovers she doesn't have any memory of who she is. They call her Jewel because they found a map with that name on it in her clothing. She gradually retains her memory and finds she can do many things your ordinary miss cannot, such as fencing, knife throwing, and her way around a ship. This story takes place at the time England is trying to control and takeover the States and in this book New Orleans. The Duke has a plantation in New Orleans and whie in England he gathers information for the Americans. There are pirates in this story, some cashes with the enemy, kidnapping, and of course love, are also included in this well told story. I did enjoy it very much.

This book has a great premise - that of a beautiful very young girl/woman being washed ashore at the feet of Adam Trent, the Duke of Cornwall, who is part American and part British although His loyalties are with America and he is currently working as an American spy against England.

But, once this mysterious woman is washed ashore near his estate, his interest in her and her background take precedence in his mind and heart, especially when it is learned she has very few memories of her life. One item of interest is the portion of map that survived her wash in the ocean - it appears to be the partial map of a hidden treasure and includes a notation to "Jewel" which is apparently the young woman's name.

*Slight Spoilers* It's obvious from the beginning that Adam and Jewel are going to be an item. He is immediately very protective of her and doesn't seem to realize he has fallen in love although he knows he feels lust. I strongly disliked the fact that a 35 year old man who thought Jewel was 16 years of age - at the most - would take some of the steps he took when he should have been looking upon Jewel as a daughter. This pretty much ruined the story for me from the beginning, especially when he took her on a horseback ride/picnic and began undressing her.

When the intimacy begins, it is truly laughable. The often used line of "Why didn't you tell me" becomes "WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME!" to which I would have loved to interject and say at this point - "WHAT DID YOU EXPECT - YOU MORON!" Anyhooo, this book will never rank as one of the even slightly memorable reads for me. Lots of action, lots of lust, lots of dumb things going on - even some interesting things going on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this. August 18, 2014

This was an entertaining read and I enjoyed it very much. While I don't think it was deep or involved, it was exactly what I like sometimes, a get-away story with nice characters that provide a smile as you end the book. I read this in the heat of summer in the deep South so the tropical atmosphere in parts of the story were easily felt! I look forward to reading more books by Brenda Jernigan.

I enjoyed the book although I wish theses authors would not use so much detail on love making. They should emulate my favorite Regency novelist - Georgette Heyer!
