5.0 out of 5 stars Malia's "Beta" Heroes are unlike any others...
I just finished Malia Martin's second novel, The Duke's Return, and am again blown away by how incredibly unique, special, and surprising her heroes can be. This time, It's Trevor ... he's a complete rake (OK, that's nothing new) ... but wait, he is also desperately trying to cope with a weakness that's plagued him his whole life ... 1.0 out of 5 stars Dull Dull Dull!
I must say that I was sorely disappointed with this book. What first attracted me to 'The Duke's Return' was the glowing reviews given by others, but sad to say, the book didn't live up to expectations. I found the characters mismatched and irritating. Trevor (a.k.a. the duke) came across as an insecure and weak person. His problems with dyslexia, although nothing to...

Ms Martin is masterful at creating a heroine who compliments him, as his foil, and together they are truly complete, vanquishing both their doubts and weaknesses in the power of their love. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars New Reader in Ohio, August 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Duke's Return (Mass Market Paperback)
This is my first Malia Martin book. Put it this way...I'm only on page 110 ( not even half way through) and it's absolutely WONDERFUL!!! I had to comment on it! (This is also the first time I have written a comment.)

I think "Dull, Dull, Dull" in Singapore doesn't know how to appreciate a different take on a character. Something Miss Maring has truly done! As much as I love historical romances, there are only so many scenarios to write. And while 'arrogance, looks, & breeding' are all great...to a point, Trevor is a wonderully 'human' and DIFFERENT approach to "boy meets girl, boy saves girl, boy & girl live happily ever after!"

I look forward to searching our more of Ms. Martin's work! But for now...back to my book! Thank you! =)

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!, March 16, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Duke's Return (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved this book because it was a little different than all the historical romance books I've read. Sara was older than the duke, which was a new twist that I liked and she was widowed, which made the love scenes unlike the rest that I've read where the heroine is a virgin. I also thought Trevor was a gentle, loving person, instead of the rakish rogue books usually portray. It was a great read! I couldn't put it down.

His problems with dyslexia, although nothing to scoff at in real life, was cited as the main reason for his fear of responsibility to the dukedom. Sara (the dowager duchess) lacked the strength of will and charisma that marks a true romance heroine. His "love" for her stemmed more from his lust to bed her rather than any stronger emotion. Thus, there was no basis for true love. All in all, this novel lacks the ability to entrall readers.

1.0 out of 5 stars A "Regency" That Isn't!, August 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Duke's Return (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm sure the author is a lovely person but this book was a major disappointment. Implausible plot, use of modern language, and poorly developed characters are just some of the problems with this book. I cannot believe it ever got published. If you love regencies, don't read this!

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT HISTORICAL!, November 3, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Duke's Return (Mass Market Paperback)
This was my first Malia Martin book. I thought the story was wonderfully written. Trevor was written with a very believable short coming that made his character very endearing. I will be looking forward to reading another Malia Martin book.

5.0 out of 5 stars malia martin has done it again!, August 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Duke's Return (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved Ms. Martin's first book, HER NORMAN CONQUEROR, and with THE DUKE'S RETURN she has once again impressed and entertained this reader. Her characters are very real and appealing and her unique stories stay with me long after closing her books. I'd recommend both of these books to any fans of historical romance and I'll be looking forward to reading Ms. Martin's third.

This review is from: The Duke's Return (Mass Market Paperback)
Finally I got a second taste of Ms. Martin's work. This story used the perfect blend of history and fiction. I really enjoyed the plain language which made the characters genuine. Looking forward to more work from this fresh and young author. I am recommending it to everybody.
