4.0 out of 5 stars Above average Bollywood romance/comedy, July 9, 2009
By
This review is from: Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge (DVD)
This is about a girl (Karisma Kapoor) who has been raised by 3 very different uncles (Om Puri, Paresh Rawal, Anupam Kher) who keep her close and want her to be clones of each of them in her tastes. They even throw out a housekeeper who tries to support her individuality. The housekeeper finds a boy (Salman Khan) who she thinks would make an ideal husband for her. The parents of the boy approach the uncles who refuse. The girl eventually resists this control and runs away to join a bus tour of Switzerland and Austria (lead by Johnny Lever)- but Salman's character has a plan to win her over - and then win over the uncles.

This is good Bollywood fare made in 2000. It has more than average number of songs and dances (a bit more of the modern rather than traditional style). The songs were fine but it was more the dances I noticed. Everyone throws themselves into some diverse crowd pleasers- and Salman is really good at these.

My fear when choosing to buy it was that this could have been one of those over-the-top slapstick comedies, but it isn't. Salman and the 3 uncles are mostly reined in. Anupam Kher's effeminate uncle veers into excess in its limp-wristedness but Anupam is charming as he often is and you can forgive it. There is one minor policeman character who seems to be impersonating a laughing hyena who got irritating but he isn't on long. Salman finds reasons for gratuitous shirt removals as is his trademark.

Salman & Karisma do the romantic thing (and dancing) well and the support characters are good.

I found this quite entertaining in the Bollywood style. It wasn't looking that dated either.

Now while I have given it a 4 and it can be given 5 by some, I should warn that not everyone was so enthused and it tends to get about average elsewhere on the Net - so it may depend on your taste (and whether you have a problem with Salman as some do).

Quite an entertaining movie with a predictable plot of boy setting out to win girl who has 3 protective uncles. The uncles are a strange bunch, the oldest a tough old fitness freak, the second a zealously religious man and the third one is a bit of an effeminated fluffhead fashion designer. All 3 uncles had their own different ideas of the ideal husband for their beloved niece, thus resulting in some totally farcical but hilarious series of events from both of the young lovers ( Salman Khan & Karishma Kapoor)and the uncles. I love the chemistry between Salman and Karishma as the lovers but I find the characters of the uncles more entertaining at times! Songs were quite cheesy at first, but somehow it kind of grows on you after listening and watching it a couple of times and there are at least a couple of really good songs!

Quite a good movie to watch for a bit of escapism from reality and a dose of Salman Khan's magical charm!
