4.0 out of 5 stars Dark, trippy, and dramatic, May 29, 2003

This review is from: Dum Dum Baby (Audio CD)
Where has this group been hiding, and why did I just find out about them? Baby Fox's "Dum Dum Baby" is a showpiece of dark, dense, trippy beats and melodies, perfectly offset by the female lead singer's crooning and the occasionally growled/rapped male vocals providing counterpoint.

The first song, "Dum Dum Baby," lets you know right away that you're in for a definitely different experience. Heavy basslines thunder while a full symphonic string section grinds menacingly in the background. But then, the lead singer kicks in with her retro-style vocals (sounds to me almost like she's from the 1940's big-band era) to provide a note of innocence and purity to the drama. But this isn't all - next thing you know, a male voice slides in, adding an unobtrusive rap to the mix.

And that's just the first song! The rest of the CD meanders all over the trip-hop map, incorporating enough catchy melodies and hooks to fill a tacklebox. The mixture of the heavy beats and dramatic melodies find a perfect balance with the brightness of the female vocals.

Believe me, this release is a VERY dark example of the trip-hop genre. The CD as a whole creates a spooky atmosphere that conjures up visions of dark city streets, or even (not trying to be corny or overly dramatic here) inky black woodlands where unknown things lurk in the shadows (see "Hallow'een" for a perfect example).

Why not 5 stars? Those little "filler" tracks in between the "real" songs are annoying. They run anywhere between 26 seconds and 1:37 apiece, and while they do provide some continuity between the preceding and following tracks, I've really never been a fan of spoken-word nonsense or random noise.

In summary: GREAT music, VERY unique. Grabs your attention and holds it until the last note.

Well. This album takes a bit to get into, but keep listening to it. It is truly an amazing album. Thick, dense, funky, and groovy. Tripped out and mesmerizing. I like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT!, February 11, 2002

Baby Fox is an amazing, slightly underground, trip-hop group. I loved this CD the first time I heard it. All of the songs are absolutley stunning...each one is so unique but unbelievable. If you like groups like massive attack, LHOOQ, Esthero, Portishead, and Tricky......you'll LOVE this one!
