Book Description

September 2, 2002 P and upDumpy

When terrible weather hits Apple Harbor, Charlie, Pop-Up, and Dumpy rush to get ready. But they`re not the only ones who are busy-Stinky the Garbage Truck, Tommy the Tow Truck, and Big Red the Fire Engine are all out working in the storm, and Saucy Sue, a fishing boat, is stuck out to sea. With quick thinking and teamwork, Dumpy, Charlie, and all of the trucks make their own `lighthouse` on top of the bluff, and guide Saucy Sue through the big storm. Julie Andrews Edwards is one of the most recognized figures in the world of entertainment. Perhaps best known for her performances in Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, and Victor/Victoria, Julie is also the author of several favorite children`s books, including Dumpy the Dump Truck, Dumpy at School, Dumpy and His Pals, Dumpy and His Friends on the Farm, and Little Bo: The Story of Bonnie Boadicea. Emma Walton Hamilton is a Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor, New York, where she lives with her husband and young son, Sam, whose passion for trucks was the inspiration for this series. Tony Walton, winner of three Tony Awards, an Emmy, and an Oscar, is a world-renowned set and costume designer for the theater and film. Mr. Walton`s nostalgic artwork evokes the beauty of the American farm and lends a classic feel to the Dumpy books.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

PreS-K. In this most recent title in the Dumpy the Dump Truck series, Dumpy helps the village of Apple Harbor after the lighthouse is struck by lightning and loses power. On the way to the lighthouse, Dumpy helps some of his friends--Stinky the Garbage Truck, Tommy the Tow Truck, and Big Red the Fire Engine--who have been slowed down by the storm. Together with Polly the Police Car, they guide a fishing boat named Saucy Sue to shore, and they keep the lighthouse vigil for other marine craft that might need help. Cooperation, assisting those in need, remaining calm in an urgent situation, friendship: these are all qualities that Dumpy models well for today's young children. Watercolor and colored-pencil drawings show the drama of the storm and the warmth of a small, idyllic community whose members treat each other like family. Kathy Broderick

This review is from: Dumpy and the Big Storm (Hardcover)
Here is another Dumpy story with just the right amount of action, suspense, and the slightest hint of danger, as well as lots of vehicles, for little boys to enjoy. My 4 year old loves Dumpy books and this one is no exception! The illustrations are bright and the text is substantial--not dumbed-down for small
children. We look forward to more Dumpy books in the future!
