This is great historical fiction about the Covenanters of Scotland in the 1600's. Duncan is a young boy full of imagination who is thrown into the throngs of war. I love how the author shows the fears and thoughts and feelings of the characters. The book seemed a little slow at first but it was worth it to continue reading. Was heart-tugging to see the loyalties of these families to 'King Jesus' and their constant love for one another.
Great story. Great book to read before reading 'Against the Tide, The story of Margaret Wilson'.

My husband is reading these out loud to the family at night. They are loving them!! My husband is loving them!! He is not a reader but after he sends the kids to bed he will stay up and continue reading. I have gone to bed twice now before him. :) This has never happened!!
They are also building an interest in wanting to know more about the Coventers, Scotland, and the like. The boys of course love the drama; the Swords, the archery, and muskets. My oldest boy is interested in getting a Crow and teaching him to talk. It will be interesting to see what kinds of adventures these books take us. ;)

This is some of the best historical fiction I read. These novels about the Scottish Covenanters are filled with action and adventure.
