1.0 out of 5 stars DuneCraft is destroying what carnivorous plants are., March 16, 2007

This is extremely annoying.

For one, lets talk about the growing place first.

You get a box with a bunch of cute little pictures of little creatures with their mouths open on the front that look absolutely stupid.

For one, this, "Flytrap Friends" (YAY!), and Carnivorous Creations and all others they make are very dumb. I bet NOBODY in this company has even GROWN a carnivorous plant.

I grow more than 40 different varieties of Carnivorous plants, from Venus Flytraps to Byblis to Nepenthes to Sarracenia to Drosera to Pinguicula. This is just stupid.

So parents, you may be eying these because your intriguing and curious children want some nifty 'Fwytrap Fwiends' as DuneCraft puts it, so they can feed it insects and laugh. (Have the decency to read some information on Carnivorous plants, potting soil, fertilizer, and hamburger will kill it, don't go and kill carnivorous plants because you think they are a garden plant! They have VERY special needs, if you want your child to have a nice time with these, you have to be willing to get EXTREMELY good lightning, VERY CLEAN distilled or rainwater, NO FERTILIZER, peat moss, perlite, sphagnum peat, all of this costs a bit. You need to provide it right or have crying children)

Well, guess what? Not only is this overpriced, but 99% of the seeds are old, and even if you stratify the seeds in the fridge for 2 months, nothing happens. The container is non drainable and it is just awful. The image you see on the front looks great! Thats how these plants should look, but that is NEVER what anyone gets.

You can get healthy, full grown (Which, if you were to grow these plants from seed, it would take up to 6 years for them to reach full size, children don't want to wait till they are teenagers to have stuff that eats bugs)

Go to places like [...] a website where a guy who wrote a book (Peter D'Amato, The Savage Garden). And for information on how to grow them (you don't want poor dead, carnivorous plants and crying and sad children, do you, when you could've easily just read a few things?) go to www.Sarracenia.com and click on the FAQ section, the creator is Barry Rice, another professional carnivorous plant enthusiast.

Good growing! And don't buy from DuneCraft!

First thing to note is according to the directions, your looking at at least 3 months till there's a chance you will even see your first sprout of a plant. The directions say you must store it in the fridge for 2 months before leaving taking it out and allowing it to sit for a month before anything will happen. Take note of that before considering buying this.

I followed the directions exactly and my dome has been out the fridge for 2 months now with no sign of life. I would say this thing is a bust, your better off finding a place to buy the plant already grown and putting it in your own terrarium.

The instructions were quite difficult to follow by 7-9 year old children. Product still in refrigerator as advised. No sign of germination, Children have lost interest and have all but forgotten the project.
