A sililar pack of Kobolds from reaper would retail for $10.

All of the Iconics match their D&D artwork down to the last detail

If you bought similar models and dice from any other manufacturer it would cost you at least $60, to get it at Amazon's bagain price is too good of a deal for any D&D miniatures enthusiast to pass up.

This Basic Set has its limits, but it was a good refresher and easy to get back in the game w/ a new player.

I hope this review helps because one reviewer rates the game w/o even mentioning anything about the product or game play.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good starter, but less complete than previous D&D primers, March 18, 2006

The 2004 (3rd ed) is still a good primer to introduce those new to boardless games to the greatest RPG ever invented. This boxed set has everything you need to play, but less pregenerated adventures than the previous boxed sets. You will hook newcomers on this amazing world of adventure and imagination, then discover you'll soon want evern more options than this set can provide (which was WIZARDS' plan in the first place). The hardcover D&D Player's handbook gives you the complete rules, with more race, spells etc.
This set comes with16 nice painted miniatures (4 heroes and the rest monsters) better than the punch-outs of the earlier set.
The set has 4 pre-genterated character sheets to start play immediately, along with the standard 7 dice, quick start rules, a small first adventure book and "advanced" rulebook, 4 double-sided map tiles for generating dungeons and combat. Also this set has monster stat card very handy for handling combat without constant pageturning. The set lists for ages 12 and up, but a good reader of 8 (along with an adult guide) would love this set.

4.0 out of 5 stars In regards to the religious..., November 13, 2004

Okay, in the past, Dungeons and Dragons was ridiculed by the religious for nothing. It was a new game that came out that featured, heroes, dragons, evil, good, and everything else that makes a fantasy what it is. So when I read the review by the Kristin, I had to come here to put my two cents in on everyone's behalf.
This product is a game. Nothing else. Just like Monopoly, Life, etc. The difference is that this game requires a bit of imagination. Have I bought this product? Yes, for my daughterm and she is eight years old--the same age that I started playing (I'm 30). She has fun with it along with me and my wife.
I advise other customers not to listen to the religious stuff that someone my put in about demons, devils, violence related to reality, and all the other lies. If you want to believe that this game is evil, then stop watching movies like Lord of the Rings, Conan, and stop watching cartoons period. Because if you think that Dungeons and Dragons is evil, then everything else that we, as humans, enjoy shgould be evil to you as well. If they aren't 'evil' like Dungeons and Dragons...I'm not going to resort to name calling. It just boils down to being a hypocrite.
If you're lookiing for something to spark your or your childrens' imaginations, get this game. It's fun, sociable, and entertaining.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Kit, August 26, 2005

This kit is really great for those just getting started playing Dungeons and Dragons, or for those who want an easier version of a fantasy-based game. It comes with "quick start rules" - a much reduced version of the rules which are easier to follow, as well as ready made characters, character sheets, and a first adventure to get you started. It also includes an advanced rule book that covers clerics, fighters, rogues, sorcerers, and basic non-scripted game play, a full set of dice, and 4 two-sided map tiles resembling a dungeon to place your minatures on.

The minatures that came with my kit are: Redgar the human fighter, Aramil the elven sorcerer, Lidda the halfling rogue, Eberk the dwarven cleric, 2 orc warriers, 2 warrior skeletos, 2 kobold warriors, 2 kobold skirmishers, 1 wolf skeleton, 1 Green Dragon, 1 troglodyte, and 1 dire rat.

My group was pretty happy with it, we were able to play without much preparation, but when we wanted to create our own adventures, we ended up buying the Player's Handbook, the Dungeon Master's guide book, and the Monster's Manual so that we could create our own characters and adventures. The miniatures, however, have been the most useful part!

All in all, I would say D&D is a fun game in the vein of most fantasy writers - especially Tolkien. It's a nice way to interact with and get to know your friends, and includes a bit of teamwork and creative problem solving on the side.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ups and Downs of Dungeons And Dragons Basic Game, February 18, 2006

Ok I was a little nervous after purchasing it, thinking it would be bad. When it arrived. I forgot about my video games, and just played this over and over. This box includes 4 tiles, 16 minatures which includes 4 heros, 7 dice (Dice would be much more expensive bought anywhere else), Quick Start Rules (If you have someone who played D&D in "their time" just have them explain it), First Adventure Book, and Advanced Rule Book. I suggest purchasing this with the expanded minatures, and the Master's guide so you won't get confused along the way. I have written some adventures, and it really gets you thinking (probably a good gift for parents who have kids who love RPGs, because it is like a video game in a way. So if you get this, you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME game., July 31, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Dungeons & Dragons Basic Game: Dungeons & Dragons Game (D&D Game) (Game)
This game was of AMAZING quality, and included 16, extremely detailed, miiatures. It also includes a pre-made adventure + characters, so you can start play immediately. I bought this game, thinking it would be fun to try the basic version (I had already played D&D 3.0 with a friend). This Game is well worth the $16.75 that you pay. I would recommend this game to anyone over 11 (it's a little complex). Also A Great family Game.

There are a lot of ways that you can use D&D as a family game. Most obvious is to play as a family. This can work, but can also be difficult given differences in maturity, life experience, creativity, etc.

A different way to approach this is to encourage the game in your children, and help them to find or form a gaming group. Benefits are many including having structured social activity that you have a schedule for up-front; knowing your children's friends and their parents; etc.

This boxed set is a great introduction to the game, but the person you are getting it for is looking to join an established game, this might not be the right choice. Rather, the Player's Handbook would be a better option (slightly more advanced rules, which most established games will already be using).

Read through the rules together and learn about the game. It's a great chance to have fun AND involve yourself in their life.

Fairly new to the RPG genre so we're still working out the rules. This is just a starter kit and it explains some of the basics but remembering the various rules, variables, modifiers, and many of aspects of the basic gameplay takes some effort and is part of the work of getting started. The cardboard maps are fairly sturdy but miniatures are not the greatest in detail but decent and don't appear to be very sturdy. The booklets are just pamphlets and are okay but not completely through. The main book is meatier and mostly the first few dozen pages of the player's handbook without all the races, classes, abilities, equipment, etc. It's a cool game if you can get past the rules/regulations and get into the adventures. We haven't started making our own quests and dungeons yet but the other half of the main book is about dungeon mastering with monsters and the rest of the sample quest.

This review is from: Dungeons & Dragons Basic Game: Dungeons & Dragons Game (D&D Game) (Game)
I'm new to the whole Dungeons and Dragons thing and was a little skeptical about the whole thing. All my skepticism dissapeared after I read the beginner's manual. Dungeons and Dragons is so enjoyable that I've also ordered the Player's Manual, Monster Manual, and the Dragon Master's Guide. Only problem with D&D is that if you want to be more involved with the game and get the best experience possible, you must get the three books mentioned above.
