I was expecting cheap cardstock or cardboard pieces, but in reality these are pretty heavy duty plastic with etched words on them to indicate size (indicates both blast and burst sizes so are dual purpose). These should last quite a while and will be a good addition to any 4e gaming group's accessories. I think that they should cost less for what they are, but I don't have the materials or ability to create some for myself.

These markers are intended to be used as visual aids in a D&D (or similar types of games which use one inch squares to track movement) to visually mark for the players the blast radius of spells, or the affect radius of attacks, etc.

Anything which helps the players keep track of what is going on in the game's combat field, is a great help. I run both 3.5e and 4e games, and being able to visualize things like blast radius (or cloud affect fields, etc.) and which characters are on fire (with other status markers), and which are weakened, and which are bloodied (4e only), etc. helps keep the game MOVING!

All of these status markers (like this blast radius pack), and the various other status markers this company provides, allow all of the burden of tracking things to be taken away from the players (and the DM!) and simply placed out on the table with visual cues instead.

Yes, the DM still has to manage all of this. But, with the visual aids, the odds of a player forgetting just which monster is in the cloud of [whatever] or forgetting where they need to stand in order to avoid that cloud go down dramatically with these types of visual markers.

Yes, you can make your own, and yes these are a bit pricey (especially with the S&H they charge), but these are somewhat more durable, and they come pre-printed and measured and ready to use. As a DM, I am finding them to be a great visual aid for my players, and that is important, because it takes the focus of the game OFF of stat tracking and battle meta gaming, and it places it BACK on just having fun at the table, where it belongs.

5 stars for the visual aids themselves, and -1 star for the rather high price of what is basically simple printed heavy card stock.
