4.0 out of 5 stars Great Beer & Pretzels Game - I liked it better than Three Dragon Ante
I bought Inn-Fighting shortly after it came out and have played it 10 or so times. Games usually take from 45 minutes to an hour, but I have had games last ten minutes and two hours. It seems that the more players, the longer the game takes, kind of like in Munchkin.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty complicated for a game of ale and dice

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Beer & Pretzels Game - I liked it better than Three Dragon Ante, March 8, 2008
This review is from: Dungeons & Dragons Inn Fighting Dice Game (Hardcover)
I bought Inn-Fighting shortly after it came out and have played it 10 or so times. Games usually take from 45 minutes to an hour, but I have had games last ten minutes and two hours. It seems that the more players, the longer the game takes, kind of like in Munchkin.

For those of you not in the boardgame community, a "beer and pretzels" game is a fun rules-light game that you can play while socializing or sitting in a pub. Inn-Fighting excels at this description, and the flavor of the game makes it perfect to take with you to a local pub.

You will need plenty of counters, I'd say around 25 per player should be enough. I bought 150 blue glass counters and a dice bag in which to hold them at a local gaming shop. I would complain about the counters not being included if the price was $25, but for $15 it's not a problem and most gamers have a lot of counters anyway.

I liked Three Dragon Ante as well, but feel rules are too structured for what is supposed to be a fantasy card gambling game that you can also play in-character. I can never get my friends to play 3DA, but I have no problem getting them to play Inn-Fighting with me. Inn-Fighting is not designed to be played in-character, but it is a great game to play when waiting for a late arrival to your RPG game or for postgame.

Overall it's a pretty good game that is recommended if you're into D&D or fantasy in general. Another good "drinking game" game with great mechanics is Red Dragon Inn, but it doesn't have as much replay value.

Since Amazon is not currently offering a discount on this game, I recommend purchasing it from a friendly local game shop(FLGS) instead of Amazon. These shops offer places to hang out and play games, and many have gone out of business by the e-commerce boom. I buy stuff online when the discount is greater than 20%, but otherwise I try to keep the local guys in business.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun in a mug!, November 1, 2007
This review is from: Dungeons & Dragons Inn Fighting Dice Game (Hardcover)
I was looking for a card game that runs a little faster than Munchkin. I've been waiting for this one. The first time we played, we had 5 players. It took an hour to complete 1 game. It was rather enjoyable. It has a nice mix of D&D rules and traditional card battling games. Its well-balanced and documented. Make sure you have plenty of counters!

5.0 out of 5 stars The whole family loves it., April 18, 2008

In a world of video game overload and computer isolationism its nice to have a fantasy roll playing game the whole family can play at the dinner table. This game teaches strategy, probability and statistics. As long as the kids know the Ale used in the game is ginger ale we see no problems with the game's theme. And it such obvious fantasy when compared to the hyper-realistic violence on the computer these days that I don't worry about adverse effects on my kids. Another nice feature is that, unlike a lot of D&D style roll playing games, Inn Fighting games go quickly. We can play two in an hour after dinner. Our 8 year old daughter is constantly clammoring to play and my wife likes the game too. Good fun!

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty complicated for a game of ale and dice, December 9, 2007
This review is from: Dungeons & Dragons Inn Fighting Dice Game (Hardcover)
I DM a regular D&D group, and I was hoping that this game could be something for us to do when we're waiting for a latecomer, or that a side group could be playing while another part of the party is engaged elsewhere. Unfortunately, the rules are way too complicated for that. There are some very specific rules about when certain actions can happen (some things only happen when 3 ales are showing, some things only when 3 luck are showing, etc.) Plus, instead of being about the player characters themselves, everyone is dealt an adventurer card that they play. Thus it loses a lot of the personal appeal.

If I wanted to play a card game that has no relation to the D&D game already in progress, I could just play Magic: The Gathering.

I just got this game and it is a simple but fun to play game, something to do while waiting for people to show up to an RPG or a nice way to spend a rainy afternoon with a pile of other board games, simple to run and fun to see what results come up on the dice. We have it included in the round table of games in our group.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not exactly a game to play within a D&D game, April 14, 2011

The game is a non-collectible card and dice game that is driven nearly equally by the cards drawn as the dice. The point of the game is to acquire 20 VP, through dealing damage to, and knocking out, the opposing players' adventurers and/or bystanders. To do so, you roll the 6 customized D6s provided, determine your course of action, be it punching the enemy to your left, throwing a chair at the enemy to your right, or using a special attack that can hit any player's characters, then rolling the D20 to determine your effectiveness. Each adventurer has differing stats that make the decisions you have sometimes very simple based on your bystanders, or sometimes very complex. All in all, the results are somewhat based on a player's sense of strategy, but has a good bit to do with luck as well.

Thematically, it fits well within the D&D realm, but due to the way the game plays, it does not translate well into a game to have D&D characters play, which clearly was not intended. If you intend to find a game to have characters play within a D&D session, this is not it. If, however, you find your play group short some players, it is a good game to play with 3-6 players, as is listed on the box. Short of 3 players, the game is very hit-for-hit, tit-for-tat, rather than the randomness expected in a tavern brawl. I have not played it with more than 6 players, so I can only imagine why it's billed as 6 players, which I suspect is because there are not really sufficient cards to play with that many players, nor might the game be quick enough for the intended play.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really fun family / group game, not the best for D & D, January 31, 2011

I love board games and have many - when a friend brought this over a couple of weeks ago, we ended up playing several rounds of it and we all really enjoyed it. One of the best things about the game is it's very luck-based so depending on your roll, and the cards you may or may not receive based on the dice, you can go from being on top to the very bottom in a single turn. I've seen people come from behind - at about ten "VP" or victory points and win the game in a single round having made a good use of a card and taken out an adventurer.

The game was originally designed to be used during a D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) game the make a tavern brawl a little more fun and interesting, but having played D&D for years, they can be interesting and tactically-challenging enough without adding a 1-hour card/dice game into the mix. The game can go very quickly or very slow all depending on the dice and how the players implement their cards.

One thing to note is that inside the box, there's a card that says to go to Wizards website to create your own characters and apparently this IS NOT an option. The site's page doesn't exist, nor from my research has ever existed. I created my own template by scanning a card at 600dpi and implementing my Photoshop skills, and I'll probably upload the template to Boardgamegeek at some point in the near future. It's fun using characters you've made for Dungeons and Dragons in the game and creating a skillset that make sense for them as a character for this little game, but is not necessary at all. The characters included in the game are all fun to use.

I play this regularly with the family and we have two kids, ages 7 and 6 and they have a fun time as well. Keep in mind that the artwork is a bit sexy since the regular audience for D&D is males ages 10-30, but there's nothing overtly offensive. It's just that all of the females in the game's artwork are very well-endowed up top.

Great game, pick it up while it's still available!

4.0 out of 5 stars you are all right...well most of you, June 8, 2008

ok yup if you buy this game look for the suggested additional rules on the net. They help explain some of the finer points of the game. It can be a bit confusing for what appears to be a simple card game but it is worth it. My wife and I have played a couple times with friends and enjoyed it. I was once a AD&D player but the others have never played but still had fun and understood the game. I do so wish the character creation template was actually available on the wizards website but oh well.

I purchased this product because I also own Three Dragon Ante by the same publisher. I was not dissapointed! Inn-Fighting has been great fun and is engaging enough to play for several hours in one session if you felt like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars All the chaos you can expect from a tavern brawl., January 18, 2008
This review is from: Dungeons & Dragons Inn Fighting Dice Game (Hardcover)
Inn-fighting is a great product: players have a character who brawl until they die; at that point you just draw another one and start kicking butt once again. You character can also be boosted by bystanders (meat-shields) who grant minor boons. You might also gain action cards which often interrupt and change actions taking by you or by others. adding more to the chaos. Although devising a strategy is a good idea, the game is too dynamic and chaotic for any long term progress. Options of what you can do in your turn is determined by the dice; therefore, at times restricting what you can do from what you want to do. Also the great thing about this game is that it is quite easy to attack the person on the lead, you heal your character from his/her victory points. Your characters power attack is aimed only at the person with the most points. This chopping at the legs, provides for chaos, uncertainty on who is going to win, and also the irony of being targeted when yo don't expected. It's all great fun.
Note: You will need tokens or coins to play this game.

The game is loosely based on d&d mechanics. I have played with non-DnD gamers and they had great fun with this game.
