I have been playing heroScape since the beginning - I own and use almost every single set and expansion, and recently picked up this new D&D expansion set.
Honestly, I was not looking forward to this expansion - one of the things I like most about the original game is the simplicity of the play. After a couple of games with this new set, I can definitely say this is a great addition to the core gameplay. Aside from a couple of new rules and terrain effects, the major addition is a campaign mode. The included campaign is set up as four "rooms" that connect to make a dungeon. Each room has a condition that must be met before the players can go on to the next, and it is possible to gain and lose characters from the party. The included play scenario is a lot of fun, and I think it will inspire players to come up with campaigns of their own. An additional campaign can be downloaded at Playdnd.com, and there is an another exclusive campaign available at Heroscapers.com. The detail and paint of the figures are great - they seem like WOTC took existing D&D Miniatures and scaled them to the heroScape system. New terrain includes Shadow Tiles (which give a +1 to defense) Rocks (repainted glaciers) and dungeon tiles. The creatures (such as the feral Troll) are a LOT more difficult to kill, and the new Heroes seem perfectly balanced. One of the best new rules in my opinion, is the trap roll for glyphs, and the ability to carry/drop glyphs. Made for some interesting fights. This set doesn't really change the core game play, it just adds a new twist - campaign instead of typical deathmatch or capture the flag. All of the official master rule scenarios have always had victory conditions, but I think this is going to get people more focused on creative ones. As a long time player, I was skeptical of WOTC taking this franchise over, but I think they have done a great job with this. My only reservation is that I am concerned they will ultimately try to make this a "collectable" game with blind purchase figures. Let's hope not - The exclusives were bad enough (although they have rectified this somewhat with the recent expansion - now re-release the flag bearers in a reasonably priced set!!!) I Highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys HeroScape and wants to try something new.

I recently bought this, and am very happy with it. Being a life long D&D fan, I was looking for something to play with my kids (age 6 and 4). The game has 2 sets of rules (Basic and Advanced). The Basic set is very simple, and my 6 year old had no problem with it. The game is fun, doesn't take forever, and the pieces look good. I highly recommend this game to anyone.

My grandson is a die hard electronics and computer game nut. He would literally spend 24/7 on his PS3, handheld gamer, or computer - then a friend got him interested in the Heroscape game. This apparently is a game dating back some years, but has the ability to capture the imagination of 13 year olds. It's made out of tough plastic, but requires analytical skills and the lure for interacting with others. This is rather a hard to find, but we've been attempting to get him the entire set so that he can include others. It's nice to see something like this resurrected! Cudos!

I am a long time Dungeons and Dragons player. I bought this set because the son of a neighbor brought over their Heroscape Swarm of the Marro set. The two boys (7 & 8 years old)had fun building the pieces and playing with the figures. I saw the Dungeons and Dragons version on Amazon and said "What the heck!"
So far I have been pleasantly surprised. We have played it at least a dozen times. My son has learned the basic rules and has adopted some basic strategy concepts such as when to use ranged attacks, swarm attack one enemy until he drops and don't split the party (some much older adventurers still need to learn that one). My wife, who does not play D&D or any game except cards and dominoes, has learned the basic rules and now plays along as well. I wouldn't recommend it for younger or immature kids. There are lots of little pieces and the rules are not easy. If you are looking for a step up from Chutes and Ladders, this is not it. My advice: Be patient. Have fun. Let them win the first few, even if they shouldn't. For example, my son was very distressed the first time his dragon fell. Once he realized that we simply finished the game, reset it and then his dragon was good to go, he was all smiles. "I'll get you this time daddy!" If you have read this far, admit it to yourself that you want it and buy the game. It's cheaper than movies and popcorn out for the family. Try it. If you don't like it sell it on the bay site for about 70% of what you paid. Some of the older sets are going for crazy amounts.

It's a nice game as pervious Heroscape sets. Rule is the same, so you can mix what you have or play alone with this set.
There are 2 different way to play 1. Basic (Once dice roll attack power > defense, you died.) 2. Advanced (Character got life points, specail ability, and more cacualtions during the game play.) We love advanced rules because it makes the game reasonable and fun to play and it's much balance to mix with other set. (As you knew superhero never die because they are too strong if you mix with Heroscape Marvel set. Any superhero can kill the black dragon like cutting bean cake.) My 4 years old son loves it and he can play with us per Basic rule. But the problem is, the black dragon is too easy to kill even you use weakest army piece character with a lucky roll. You can one shoot the blackdragon...... So, it's a fun game if you play as advanced rules, but it's still better to play alone without mixing other sets. (You can use other set land pieces and add heroscape D1, D2 and later on D3 expension sets.) If you would like to play with basic rule with this D&D set, Heroscape Marvel set proivdes better balance and fun fighting for young kids.

Heroscape is by far one of the best miniatures game that was available. The Battle for the Underdark Master Set is a little light on terrain pieces, but still makes for some fun an interesting scenarios. The introduction of the "dungeon" is also a nice addition to the Heroscape universe. As far as the educational value of this set, it mainly goes to number crunching and strategy. Even though this game was designed for children 8 years of age and older, my brothers and I (who are in our late 20s and early 30s) have a blast playing Heroscape during the holidays. It is just a shame that Hasbro, Milton Bradley, and Wizards of the Coast have decided to terminate the game from any further development.
As a side note, if you are a Heroscape fan, you may want to visit [...]. It is an excellent resource for custom units, terrain, maps, and scenarios.

My son absolutely loves this game. I thought it might be the type of game that goes on and on (like the original D&D), but no. They have a great time playing and devising new scenarios, and it lasts about an hour. Maybe when they collect more pieces and have more people playing, it will take all night, but it seems to be a lot fun anyway you play it.

Heroscape is my favorite battle game. The rules are simple a 6 year old can play the basic game and an 8 year old can play the advanced. I play with my kids often but I play with my friends more. This game may look like a toy with it's miniatures and buildable terrain but it's a great strategy game. The more terrain and units you have the more fun you can have. As far as the D&D expansion it adds a dungeon crawl scenario theme to the game. This is not my favorite master set but still worth owning.

This is by far the lamest of the three Heroscape Master sets as each one has gotten progressively smaller in terms of number/variety of figures and terrain, but it's still Heroscape, which is awesome and fun to play. And with the game discontinued, if this is all you can get your hands on, do it! You'll be glad you did.

Awesome game for the price, but Warhammer is much more fun, although Warhammer requires pretty much hundreds to thousands of dollars and much, much more time to learn and play.
