5.0 out of 5 stars THE (ALMOST) COMPLETE NEVERWINTER SAGA November 15, 2011
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
NeverWinter Nights must had been the most anticipated RPG ever. Following in the wake of BALDUR's GATE games' artistic and financial success, our appetite was whetted for a third-person cRPG set in the Sword Coast of Faerűn. Because there are tons of reviews on the individual games (links provided), I shall focus mainly on the collection itself.

NWN SAGA: This collection contains the original NWN game together with its two expansions, Hordes of the UnderDark and Shadow of UndrenTide as well as Kingmaker a collection of Premium Modules, namely Kingmaker, ShadowGuard and Witch's Wake.
Note that the Premium Modules collection is not complete. Three are missing: Infinite Dungeons, Pirates of the Sword Coast, and Wyvern Crown of Cormyr. They are probably missing because they came with DRM that required ...always OnLine authentication (they have been pushing this for years!) - and EA took the servers down once they had been hacked at least once. Still, one would expect, after almost a decade, that the missing modules could be included in a DRM-free version. Disappointing.

NWN II SAGA: This collection contains the com/Neverwinter-Nights-2-Pc/dp/B000E0XX9Q">original NWN2 game together with its two expansions, Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir as well as its adventure Pack, Mysteries of Westgate (previously only available via digital download).
NWN2 was initially released with a number of problems, the camera being one of the most annoying, and it was not until the release of the Storm of Zehir that most of them were addressed.

I did not withheld a star because it would not be fair to these great games to receive anything short of a perfect score. However, completionists should keep in mind that the collection is *almost* complete.

Recommended for any gamer's collection.

Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Since I have played these games numerous times on multiple operating systems (XP/ XPx64, Vista and 7)(bought each individually) I found it might be helpful to know certain things ahead of time prior to purchase:

1. In order to to play the original Neverwinter Nights Campaigns on the later versions of windows you need to insure that you have the latest "critical rebuild" patch available from bioware (a few hundred MBs)and you should run the game in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2, more than likely in game cut screens will not work.If you do not have game version 1.69 or later versions of Windows will block the program due to "known compatibilty issues", You may also need to download older versions of the .NET Framework and "override" them if windows asks you about software compatibility.

2. Make sure to install all expansion packs for NWN2 prior to playing and you must run the update patch prior to installing mysteries of westgate. The reason for this is that when installing Mask of the Betrayer it creates a glitch in the original campaign that will stop game play early on.It will also provide more classes to choose from for those who are playing for the first time.

3. Intel Graphics adapters are not supported. Ensure you have an ATI (AMD) Radeon or NVIDIA Graphics card with pixel shader 2.0 or later with 3.0 or later recommended. I also recommend making sure that you have dedicated graphics. You will need to install Direct X 9 even if you have 10 (Windows Vista) or 11 (Windows 7) so choose to allow the game to install it for you or download the redistributal package from Microsoft's website.

4. For Better audio support use a 3rd party Sound card as opposed to your standard on board graphics (for more of a "3-D Sound" feel). I use Sound Blaster X-FI.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get this for the Custom Persistent Worlds! December 17, 2011
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Neverwinter Nights is one of the best gaming investments you can make. After playing through the official campaigns, I discovered the nearly endless possibilities of online campaigns.

I have played on several servers (Some of these feature better content then the official campaign.)

If you purchase this product or already own the games I would recommend taking a look at the following servers (They are totally free and have viable player populations.)

Action Servers:

Higher Ground POA (This world is gigantic, it is a mini MMOG. Its has so much to offer that I could write a review about this server alone. Higher Ground has all the standard D&D fair plus the Hells, Abyss, Elysium, and soon the Elder Evils.)

Totally free and its game balance and content could easily compete with pay to play games.

This server requires CEP 2.3 etc. but they made it easy to install everything all at once via their helpful ARF2 download

[...])

***

Heart of Winter (This is a very well designed world with a heavy Player vs. Player component that is always challenging (Trust no one.). The faction fights are a blast!)

***

Role Playing Servers:

Escape from Undeath (Very low power and low magic, but extremely well crafted and balanced to be ultra challenging)

The role play on this server is quite serious and extremely fun. It really is amazing how much fun levels 1-12 can be.

5.0 out of 5 stars use in college course January 17, 2012
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I teach a college course that uses the toolset in this game for program development and design concepts. I have had over a hundred students purchase the NWN version to use on their computers for course work. And in my experience have had no student problems in installing and running the game on any computer (including laptops) that have been sold within the last 5 five. Both of these games will play on most all computers on the market today, including laptops. NWN did have a problem with the Intel graphics chip on older laptops (pre 945) but newer versions work. It works fine under Windows 7. Vista can be a problem. One key factor is to install DirectX version 9 that comes on the disk. It does not replace any other version, it will only add the files to make it compatible (you can have DX9, DX10, and DX11 all installed on the same computer without conflict). You will need to have .net installed for the toolset to function. Always install with administrator rights.

In NWN I have my students manually update to 1.68 which is 77Mb. You can get the files from the Bioware website. If you use the auto update feature it will update to 1.69 which is over 300Mb and only adds content from the CEP (community expansion pack) which is used for adding items to use with the toolset. Version 1.68 is very stable.

NWN 2 is an update patch nightmare if you have slow Internet connections. Install the game and all the expansions and then run the auto update. You should do this update using the auto updated since it is run as an online feature and the files are not available for manual install download.

One big feature of these games is the user created game modules that are available for free. Just go to the NWN vault at [...] for lots of add on content.

Neverwinter Nights 2 is the best RPG game ever. However, it is very sad this game cannot be played on most modern-day computers (ex. 64 bit).

Premium Modules?
Kingmaker, Shadowguard and Witch's Wake are on it, but the others aren't. The only likely explanation for leaving the others off is that they were released with DRM that required an always-on internet connection and the server they pinged has since been taken down. It's silly that they couldn't... Read more
