This review is from: Dungeons & Dragons Three Dragon Ante Card Game (Toy)
This is the real-world version of the tavern game played in D&D. It is so much fun! My friends and I can play for hours and not even notice the passing of the time.

This is for up to six players, but seven may play without too much trouble. The cards are very sturdy, and the artwork on the cards is beautiful. I would not recommend this game for kids under the age of about ten years old, as there is a lot of reading and some strategy and thinking required. For older kids, and adults, this is a ton of fun.

If you're looking for a really fun card game that can easily last for a very long time, I highly recommend Three Dragon Ante! My only advice: bring lots of extra poker chips (and don't play with actual money), as running out of money is sometimes very easy in this game.

I FINALLY got around to picking up 3-dragon ante. I figured I could use it to pass the time for the characters in a game I run. After learning the rules, my girlfriend and I sat down to play a few "gambits"
This game is a ton of fun, and there's a lot more strategy involved than you might think. It's much like poker in that respect, in that knowing what your opponent has is half the fight. There is strategy involved in playing "good" or "evil" dragons, how much you ante, etc etc.
Good dragons usually result in card draws, where evil dragons steal from the pot or force other players to pay you gold.
I especially like the rules for playing a game in character. i.e. a character with 5 ranks in sleight of hand, when forced to pay another character gold, pays one less (min 1).
Very well thought out and more complex than you might expect with your first playthrough. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun game in its own right, January 28, 2007
This review is from: Dungeons & Dragons Three Dragon Ante Card Game (Toy)
Three-Dragon ante is a fun game and well worth playing, whether you enjoy the source material or not. First, the cards look very nice. The stylized artwork is very fun and the corners are cut in a way to make the cards look exotic. More importantly, however, is the game play.

Three Dragon Ante is a gambling game, similar in some ways to poke or other games of chance. However, luck is not the only factor strategy, tactics, and reading your opponent all play an important roll. Basically, the game works like this: you keep a hand of several cards and win each Gambit (similar to a hand in other games), by playing the three cards with the highest total value. However, all cards have added little bonuses and might let you steal gold from the stakes, draw extra cards, or perform similar different tricks. These powers are much more likely to come into play with low-powered cards. Thus, if you don't think you can win this Gambit you can try to plunder the stakes (and cut your losses) or get more cards to set you up for the next round.

Three Dragon Ante is fun to play. It has a low learning curve; but there are a lot of strategies you can bring into play. When we played our first game, we had the rules down by the third Gambit and were trying out different tactics shortly after.

Three-Dragon Ante was designed as an accessory for Dungeon's and Dragon's role-playing games. While it can certainly be used for this purpose to great effect it is a fun game in its own right.

I bought these cards actually to use as Action Points in my 4E D&D campaign. The cards make a great visual reminder of available Action Points.

The game itself is pokerish, but the rules allow for the game to be played alongside a D&D campaign, where a player character's class allows for special tricks in the card game.

Simple and fun, and the cards are quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rummy with a twist, January 11, 2007
This review is from: Dungeons & Dragons Three Dragon Ante Card Game (Toy)
When I first read about this game I thought it would add some extra fun into our pen and paper gaming. I was right, but it is so much more. I have played this game more outside of D&D then inside. It is a cross between Rummy and magic. My whole family enjoys this game. It is a fairly simple game to learn but has many subtle nuances. It is easy to learn and a challenge to master. If you like card games I would highly recommend this addition to you game closet.
